About NYC Has The Coolest Garbage

Every city, town and hamlet has its garbage collection days. Big sturdy green and grey cans line the streets and the local sanitation workers come along in their big, often noisy trucks and make the contents of these cans disappear. Most of what is thrown away is best not seen. Some of it is priceless, and oftentimes one cannot help but wonder why something of seeming value is being discarded. In NYC this seems to be a rather common experience. A walk of a few blocks from where I live on the night before garbage collection will quite often fill me with astonishment. I'll see perfectly usable furniture, household appliances and electronics still in working order, books, ornaments and a vast assortment of children's toys, including bicycles and other wheeled objects.

Some of us like to window shop. Others, like myself, find far more pleasure in seeing what our neighbors have on display for us. Who needs Macy's. When it's Tuesday, I'll be shopping in the free market of the streets of NYC.

Show us what your neighbors find useless and disposable.
