About Nurse Edith Cavell

Edith Cavell (1865-1915) became the first matron of the Berkendael Medical Institute in Brussels. In 1914, Berkendael became a Red Cross hospital for wounded soldiers regardless of their nationality. During 1915, she was arrested by the Germans and charged with having helped allied soldiers to escape to neutral Holland. She was executed by firing-squad on 12th October, 1915.

There are many memorials &c. to Nurse Cavell around the world; including Mount Edith Cavell, which may be found in Alberta's, Jasper National Park. A memorial which stands in St Martin's Place in London is inscribed with her words to an Anglican priest the evening before her death viz. ‘Patriotism is not enough; I must have no hatred or bitterness for anyone’.

Hopefully this Group will be of interest.
