About Hanford Nuclear Reservation

586 square miles. The most contaminated nuclear production site in the western hemisphere. Formerly used for the production of weapons-grade plutonium, a process that generated 450 billion gallons of liquid waste. Much of the waste was dumped directly into the ground. This waste, along with old reactor fuel and other dangerous materials, continues to leach into ground water, and spread towards the Columbia River. In 1949, thousands were intentionally exposed to extremely dangerous doses of radiation as part of an experiment. Currently closed, and in clean up.
