Now is Then: Snapshots from the Maresca Collection

With the press of a button, a picture is taken. In an instant, now becomes then. In the decades preceding the advent of Polaroids and digital photography, picture-taking was a thrilling and nerve-racking event. The exhibition Now is Then: Snapshots from the Maresca Collection features 150 images from the golden age of snapshot photography, the 1920s through the 1960s, selected from a collection of nearly 600 snapshots assembled by a leading expert on vernacular art, Frank Maresca, who has donated them to The Newark Museum over the past decade.


Contribute your images here at the “Now is Then” Flickr group then come visit the exhibition Now is Then. After viewing the exhibition, check out the flat-screen monitors to see digital snapshots submitted by the public. Here you'll find present-day documents of our lives, as well as evidence that, while photographic technology changes continually, our need for snapshots remains constant. And you'll find your own work in the Museum!



Snapshot Specs

Each contributor may submit up to 10 snapshots.

Digital snapshots must be submitted in JPEG, GIF, TIFF, or PNG format.

Images must not exceed 4MB compressed.

Images should be at least 1024x768 pixels in size.
