Peaks walk 2 - Edale / Kinder Scout

Saturday August 30th 2008
Meet at the main Edale pay and display car park
9:30 AM in order to start walking by 10:00 AM

upcoming.yahoo.com/event/921853

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

It's 8 miles long and involves around 550m of ascent. If you walked non stop, you could probably do it in 4.5 hours, but with lunch breaks and taking it easy, taking pictures and so on, it's more likely to be 6 hours.

2008-06-12_0746

The route we will do is the same as above but in the opposite direction.

You can also explore the route in Google Maps or Google Earth.

Important:

● This is a walk over terrain that requires more effort than a walk around the park.

● You'd be best served with proper walking boots that will keep your feet dry and comfortable and give you grip on rocks

● Having multiple layers of clothes is a good idea so that you can add and remove layers depending on how warm or cold you.

● Having waterproofs that you can wear over your clothes is a good idea - a lot of walking trousers / shorts are quick drying - jeans and other materials can become wet and stay wet which means they get heavy and uncomfortable

● Pack plenty of water and food. If you're walking for a long time your body uses a lot of energy. New food gives you energy back which you'll need as the day goes on. Water, even if you're not thirsty, keeps your body working properly - when you're dehydrated, you'll have less energy and the walk will seem like harder work than it really is.

Sorry if some of the above sounds like I'm trying to get you to suck eggs, but I don't want anyone to come along to this without realising what is involved. After this walk starts, there is nowhere to stop for refreshments, no proper shortcuts so you could find yourself three hours away from warmth, shelter and food.

Having said all that, the views are lovely, the terrain interesting and you'll come back tired after hopefully having a good long healthy day out!

(editied after date was decided)

I'm definitely up for this! I really enjoyed Plan B (thanks for arranging it Dave!).

Sadly I can't do the weekend of the 30th though! Any other weekend in August...

I'd be up for this, was an enjoyable day even with the rain & wind, 23rd or 30th is good for me.

Definitely back up the clothing comments, the waterproof overcoat I bought last week was the best £20 I'd spent, and made the different between hell & comfort. Think I'll invest in some better leg wear just in case for the next one, though got away with jeans this time round.

23rd is good - it's bank holiday weekend so it'll be busier than normal if the weather is nice, but being a Saturday that is usually less busy than Sunday, so if we meet at 9:30 again, should be ok.

I can't do either weekend, but don't worry. Maybe next next time. I did enjoy our soggy trip up Mam Tor though :)

I couldn't do the 23rd (have our wedding party the night before!) but the 30th could be do-able hopefully. I'll try and keep the diary clear for that day if you decide to do it then :)

I can do either as long as we choose early. And this time i shall definitely make it unless another part of my body decides to stop functioning. :-)

@Dave, your advice at the top is good and helpfull.

I think the 30th would be the best bet - avoiding the bank holiday weekend is smart really. It's always hard to pick a day that suits everyone.

Will definitely plan more of these though judging by how the first one went - we could work out a date for the next one towards the end of Sept to try and give more people the chance to plan ahead.

I'm almost certainly going to be able to make this. I have a sore knee due to my stupidity at deciding to play football but I should be OK to hike over the dales :)

Really looking forward to it too

The weather looks nigh on perfect for this weekend - well it looks perfect where we're going - not so good back here!

Can everyone who is going or marked their interest on the upcoming page make sure their status is correct.

Also make sure that you've read the overview of what to expect at the top of this page and make sure you know what you're getting yourself in to.

Mobile coverage at the meeting point is non-existant. If you need to arrange anything, mention it here by the end of the evening before. If anyone who's coming wants to exchange mobile numbers, send me a FlickrMail. It's still possible to get in touch before the signal disappears in Edale in case of problems.

On the morning, the posted meeting time is 9:30 with the aim of starting to walk at 10:00AM - there is a cafe just over the road from the car park, next to the train station. After parking, and getting my boots on and whatnot, I'll go to the cafe - so I'd suggest we use the cafe as our official start.

Remember to have water and food - we should be on top of Kinder Scout in the middle of the day for a lunch break.

There is a pub at the end with a nice beer garden :)

Sadly I won't be able to make this one as I'll be busy sunning myself on a Spanish beach. :o)

I'm a near certainty! The last time I used this car park it was £5 or £6 for all day and it took coins only - it might have changed since then, but it could be worth having clanky pockets just in case ;-)

publicenergy  Pro User  says:

Yeah, it's still the same - a fiver all day, coins only - and now the misererable woman doesn't run the cafe any more, you may get change for car parking when you buy something rather than get scowled at! ;)

No, it had forecast some rain, just not quite as much as we had.

As per last time if people need a lift, I can do a pickup from Chesterfield station for the train that comes in at 8:20 (from Notts), it's only a two minute detour off my route in. Drop me a line direct (before 9pm Friday) if anyone needs this.

There are a few funny traces at our lunch stop where the device got buried under my bag, but otherwise looks accurate enough. It also didn't start up until we'd got out of Edale (due to me being slack!).
