About No To the Bike Parking Tax
Westminster City Council has introduced a parking tax for PTW (Powered Two Wheelers) in Central London which is currently in an EXPERIMENTAL PHASE, although this is not clearly stated on each bay or publicised anywhere (the public notice www.notobikeparkingfees.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/we... was up for about 1 week).
We view this parking scheme as direct extortion, without valid reason, and enforced upon the community without proper notification.
This cost for extending the parking bays is essentially a one off cost, and Westminster City Council has no plans to discontinue this tax.
In fact if this tax is left to continue, we could possibly see a rise in the parking charges and other boroughs copying the same scheme, which means numerous parking tax schemes for us to sign up too!
The council should be able to fund this cost by some other means. This is a regular public service just as the parking provisions are made for the growing number of bicycle commuters.
As they have tried to promote travellers commuting by motorcycles/scooters and bicycles which alleviate London traffic congestion, they should stand by their word and continue to promote, instead of discouraging this means of commuting.
Cllrs Danny Chalkley (The Westminster Councillor who introduced this tax, and is 100% responsible for it, with a little advice from his right hand man Kevin Goad - Head of Parking Operations, Westminster City Council) has stated that they are not sitting behind closed doors on this matter.
Let’s see if this is true by showing your earnest support.
