About Friends of Norwich City Station

This group was created as a central pool of photos and information which is relevant to the site of the M&GN station to the North West of Norwich city centre. The site extends roughly from the Barn Road roundabout where the large entrance gate would have been backwards along the edge of the river, into what would have been the railway yards, the tracks fanning out behind along Marriots way.
Various pieces of archeological evidence are still visible above ground, including workshop floors, brick piers and pits.
The long term aim of the group is to catalogue all of the data available along with pictorial evidence, as a means of revealing more about the site, and ultimately clearing some areas of the site, digging some of these features and eventually erecting some form of information boards, with the aim of perpetuating the site's history.

History
The station was opened in 1882, and later became the southern terminus of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway line from Melton Constable. The station became well-used, with services to Cromer and through-carriages to a range of destinations including Peterborough and Leicester.
The station was badly bombed in 1942 when the main building was largely destroyed and thereafter the station operated from "temporary" buildings constructed on the site. It was closed to passengers on 2 March 1959 along with most of the Midland & Great Northern system, although the station remained in use for goods traffic until 1969.
