About Northern SpiritThis is how the North East looks in the Laing Art Gallery collections: You can see the Tyne filled with ships, a view of a rural Jesmond, Tynemouth filled with fire and light, tired miners on their way home and women pulling a lifeboat over a hill so it can be launched and save lives. But how does the North East look to you today? The Laing Art Gallery is developing a new display called 'Northern Spirit: 300 Years of Art in the North East', which is due to open in October 2010. As part of the new display we are interested in contemporary views of the North East. Winning photographs will be included in an interactive map in the new display, and winners will be invited to the launch event for the new display. We are interested in two types of photographs: 1. Then and Now: •How do the places depicted in the paintings look today? Have a look at the paintings in the group above (also here: www.flickr.com/photos/29770993@N02/sets/72157623540701022/) and see if you can capture the same view today. 2. Life Today: •Photographs showing life today in any part of the region. We are especially interested in images of Elswick, Scotswood, Benwell, Gosforth, Jesmond, Heaton, Byker, Walker, Wallsend, Tynemouth, Cullercoats and Whitely Bay, South Shields; Gateshead, Blaydon and the Tyne Valley. One photograph per painting under the ‘Then and Now’ category will be selected plus the top 30 photographs submitted under the ‘Life today’ category. The photographs will be judged by the Laing’s Northern Spirit project team. All photographs chosen by the judges will be included in an interactive map of the region in the new Northern Spirit gallery. The map will link your photographs with the Laing’s art collections as well as to other visions of the North East, including film and television. All those who have their images chosen will be invited to an opening event for the new gallery in October 2010. To enter, just add your photographs to the group pool above. Please label your photos either as ‘Then and Now’, plus the name of the painting, or as ‘Life Today’, plus the location. For each submission to the ‘Life Today’ category please say why you have chosen this photograph to represent how the North East looks to you today. Criteria for entry: •Each photographer can only submit one photograph per painting under the ‘Then and Now' category and five photos under the ‘Life Today’ category. •We reserve the right to reproduce any entries in publicity materials, in an interactive display at the Laing Art Gallery and on the internet. •Open only to legal residents of the United Kingdom. •Closing date for entries is 1 June 2010. •The judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. •Employees of Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums will not be eligible for the competition. •For a list of prize winners contact the Communications Team at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums on communications@twmuseums.org.uk after the closing date. |
