About North End Grid Project
The North End Grid Project is a group of community-minded photographers (professional, amateur, or somewhere in between) who have come together to create a photo-documentary about the North End of Middletown--its residents, architecture, homes, storefronts, activities or even something as simple as a weed coming out of the sidewalk. Any one can participate--members meet on the first Tuesday of each month to compare photos and get feedback about their work--we may even have a potluck (depending on what the group decides).
Throughout the summer, photos will be on display at Green Street and in the Forest City Gallery, a public art space at the corner of Green St. and Main St.
The North End Grid Project is sponsored by the Green Street Arts Center (http://www.greenstreetartscenter.org). Youth under age 16 are invited to take part in the “Kid Grid.” (Ages 12 & under should be accompanied by an adult).
Participation in the Grid Project is free, a small donation (suggested: $15–20) to offset exhibition costs and make participation accessible to those with financial need would be appreciated but is not required.
The North End Grid Project is inspired by the Grid Projects of Portland, Oregon and Victoria, Canada. Once a month we randomly choose a grid section from our map and document the area in photographs. In order to participate, we hope that you can follow the rules and be an active participant in the selection process. This means that each month there is a chosen grid area of the city for us to document. Even though you have an excellent photo of the grid, if it's from a different time frame it cannot be included. We suggest that if you can, go back and frame your photo once more at the same spot.
Film development services and cameras will be made available to North End residents who would like to participate and have financial need. For more information please email gsac@wesleyan.edu.
The first meeting of the North End Grid Project will be held on Tuesday, May 1 at 7pm at the Green Street Arts Center (51 Green St., Middletown). If you are planning to attend, please RSVP to gsac@wesleyan.edu.
