In the beginning the State Lunatic Hospital at Northampton was intended to serve the ill with the most progressive care and advanced architecture, medicine and technology available. Following the Moral tradition of treatment and set on what many called the most beautiful place on Earth, the third state hospital for the insane in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts was unlike any other.

By the end Northampton State Hospital would become more of a palace of nightmares to far too many. Overcrowded, under funded and besieged by the same fear and prejudice that initially led the State to construct this and several other institutions, the State Hospital and Institutionalization as a primary tool for mental health care throughout the country began to unravel when this community could no longer allow such pain and injustice to be ignored.
