About Being Norman Rockwell

Have you ever wondered how Norman Rockwell captured such moving moments of American life in his paintings? Did you know that, similar to the process of many filmmakers, Rockwell set up his scenes using live models and props? From July 2, 2010 through January 2, 2011 the Smithsonian American Art Museum presents, Telling Stories: Norman Rockwell from the Collections of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, the first major exhibition to explore in-depth the connections between Rockwell's iconic images of American life and the movies. We want you to come experience the magic of Rockwell’s work, and hopefully create your very own Rockwell-inspired memory to share here!

Select days, we’ll offer an activity cart with hands-on activities in the museum’s Kogod Courtyard, where you can stage and photograph your own Rockwell scene using props in front of a specially designed backdrop. You can add the photos you take at the museum or those you take at home to this group to share with fellow Rockwell fans around the world! The cart will be available most Tuesdays and Thursdays in July, and Saturdays and Sundays in October and November. You can check daily availability at the museum’s information desk or online, or by following @beingrockwell on Twitter.

The activity cart will offer items to stage scenes inspired by the following Rockwell artworks:

First Trip to the Beauty Shop
Boy in Veterinarian’s Office
Movie Starlet and Reporters
Marble Champion
Happy Birthday Miss Jones
Three Ladies Gossiping (The Gossips)
Boy and Father: Homework
