About If Microsoft Acquires Flickr [Yahoo] I'm Dropping My Account
What's this, now?
Microsoft is attempting to purchase Yahoo.
Yahoo is considering the offer.
Yahoo owns Flickr.
Which means Microsoft will own Flickr if the deal is accepted.
Why should I care?
Microsoft is a dying company. Some may argue that it's long from dead, but most financial analysts agree that Microsoft is playing "catch-up" in a race they simply can't win.
Microsoft created the mighty Zune to try to counter Apple's iPod. How many people do you know that own a Zune? How many people do you know that are dying to get their hands on one?
Microsoft revamped "Microsoft Search" into "Live Search" to counter both Yahoo Search and Google Search. How many people do you know that use Live Search? How many times have you used Live Search?
That fact is, the only thing Microsoft has going for it is its boxed software that fewer and fewer consumers are buying, such as MS Office. Beyond that, they have Xbox.and the Xbox-Live Service, which, in most marketing opinions, is what should be considered their only saving grace.
Ask yourself how many Microsoft sites you visit.
If you are a windows user the most likely response you have is "The Microsoft Security Update Page".
This should tell you something.
Now, ask yourself...
Why is Microsoft trying to purchase Yahoo?
In theory, it would make them a computer-giant again.
In theory, the combined forces of Yahoo Search and Live Search could counter the ever dominating Google Search.
In theory, cats enjoy being photographed and stamped with captions.
The reality is that Microsoft is, yet again, trying to "catch-up" in a race they simply won't win. Microsoft is hurting. Ah, but not as bad as the struggling Yahoo. They have both been drowning in a sea of Googles and Apples... so, in a last-ditch effort, we now find them trying to embrace one another in a somewhat sickening, ceremonious, corporate hug. And they are both going to drown one another.
Microsoft still believes itself "innovative" and "cutting edge".
And like their attempts to improve upon the iPod, Windows Search, Hotmail, and - eh - Windows Security, they will use their masterfully "innovative" and "cutting edge" skills to drown Flickr along with them.
They are going to drown my Flickr???
Yes.
Microsoft will turn Flickr into that Zune you have on your Amazon Wishlist... that awesome skinning feature you use everyday on Live Search... and that overpriced fee for Xbox-Live Service that you love so damn much.
Because they are innovative!
Because...
... they are cutting edge.
Um...
Yeah! W00!
... I don't want that.
Oh.
Well, good.
Then we've established something here.
But I can't stop a billion dollar buy-out, can I?
Probably not... but it's worth a shot.
With enough complaining, enough dissatisfaction, and enough voices screaming "We don't want Microsoft killing Flickr!" it might, just might, cause some Yahoo Shareholders to take notice.
And these Yahoo Shareholders...? They are the ones that can actually stop billion dollar buy-outs.
These shareholders recognize that most of what Microsoft wants to buy exists within the Yahoo framework itself... as well the Yahoo brand which is heavily embedded in the foundation of the Internet itself.
Flickr would just be a bonus, it's not the primary entity they are seeking to own.
If the voices are loud enough, they will be heard.
An angry, Anti-Microsoft community within Yahoo [we'll call this community FLICKR] can only decrease the value of the actual purchase value.
Microsoft doesn't want any more bad PR than they already have.
With this in mind, it is within the realm of possibility that both Yahoo and Microsoft would be very willing to cut Flickr from the package deal.
YAY!
I know, right?
I want to join this group and attempt to thwart Microsoft's seizure of Flickr!
Click the "Join this group" link, and actually participate.
Ask questions.
Make statements.
Believe that you can save a wonderful site and community, you might just be able to.
Okay!
Thank you.
Wait... do cats really dislike being captioned?
Probably, but what are they going to do about it.
Good point. Haha, funny kitties!
Yes. :D
