About International NO Diet Day

International No Diet Day is observed on May 6. It's symbol is a blue ribbon.

From Wikipedia:

"The International No Diet Day (INDD) is an annual celebration of body acceptance and body shape diversity. This day is also dedicated to promoting a healthy life style and raise awareness of the dangers and futility of dieting...

"Goals of International No Diet Day:

* Doubt the idea of one "right" body shape.
* Raise awareness to weight discrimination, size bias and fatphobia.
* Declare a free day from diets and obsessions to body weight.
* Present the facts about the diet industry, emphasizing the inefficacy of commercial diets.
* Show how diets perpetuate violence against women.
* Honor the victims of eating disorders"

International No Diet Day (INDD) was founded in 1992 in Britain by a feminist named Mary Evans Young. She herself was ridiculed for her weight in school, and as an adult, teaching women's management classes, she noticed how much effort women put into deciding whether or not to have a cookie. She asked them ‘What do you think would happen if you spent as much time and energy on your careers as you do on diets?’ and the discussion that came out of that question led to her founding INDD.

Take the International NO Diet Day Pledge (from Largesse, the Network for Size Esteem -- lots of great resources on this site)

I Pledge:

* That I will not diet for one day, on May 6, International No Diet Day.
* Instead of trying to change my body to fit someone else's standards, I will accept myself just as I am.
* I will feed myself if I'm hungry.
* I will feel no shame or guilt about my size or about eating.
* I will think about whether dieting has improved my health and well-being or not.
* And I will try to do at least one thing I have been putting off "until I lose weight."
