Look into the vignette issues with Full Frame cameras and decide if that bothers you.

I've had both. I like the size, shape, weight distribution and handling of the VR II better. Plus its blur-optimization at 200mm. But VR (original) is no slouch, either.

In addition to looking at FX vignetting with VR (original), look at focal breathing with VR II. If one issue impacts your work style, go with the other version. If both issues affect you, you'll need to weigh those issues vs other things.

I shoot with the VRI and still love it, enough not to want to buy / spend the $$$ on a new VRII.
With that said, the vignetting in an issue that is tolerable but annoying.

I have never personally shot with the new VRII but i hear it's pretty good and a fairly big improvement.
I have seen the old model for around $1650 so it looks like a used VRI is $500 - $600 less than a new VRII and to me, that's a lot of $$$.

BTW, when I went from my 80-200 to the 70-200 VRI my "keepers" went from 60% to about 90%, that's a big difference, it's a wonderful lens.

Focus breathing is a false issue, since everyone started bring it up to find something to bash the VR2 about, but conveniently never mentioned that the VR1 does it too, only on the wide end instead of the long end.

So IMO, you can't count it as a negative on one and not the other.

Here in Oregon, the VR 1 version is selling for about $1400 plus/minus. It's a good lens, maybe not as great as the VR 2, I am happy with it. I bought my copy used for exactly $1400. No complaints.

Focus breathing is a false issue [...]

No, it's real. Yes, it exists on the VR, also, but its effect is much different.

[...] since everyone started bring it up to find something to bash the VR2 about, but conveniently never mentioned that the VR1 does it too, only on the wide end instead of the long end.

So include it in both evaluations! ;-)

Personally, I don't think it was bash-motivated. Of course, I'm discounting posters who just like to provoke others. :-P

Focal breathing exists in all zooms. But those who use the long end for tight shots were more affected by the VR II's design *in some scenarios* than they were with the VR original. (I only encountered it once on VR II: I made note of it and compensated.)

If you use Capture NX2 there is a very good correction for this that completely negates any vignetting that may have been. The lens is awesome on FX.

Because it's a factor in both lenses, I said it's a false issue, in the sense that it's an equal problem for both, even though it's only quoted as a 'problem' in the VR2. Clearly I didn't state it very well though.

When the VR2 was first released, I saw a lot of posts regarding it's focus breathing problem as a reason to avoid it. So ignoring the VR1's issue with it, I could only conclude it was bashing.

I still almost never hear anyone talk about focus breathing on the VR1 to this day, even though Thom Hogan showed that it's actually worse on the VR1 wide end than it is on the VR2 long end.

I've got a real issue with the "vignetting problem" with the VRI.

Perhaps I have an excellent sample, but I don't see much (if any) vignetting.

Shot at f2.8:

Groundskeeper

Woman in kimono with umbrella

Masuda

None of these shots have been post processed.

I think, perhaps, that the "vignetting problem" was greatly overstated by dpreview. At least, I've never seen vignetting as bad as it was portrayed in the dpreview review.

I knew what you meant, but I don't consider it a wash unless one shoots at both extremes -- in that case, what you gain on the one hand you lose on the other. But if you're a tight-at-200mm shooter, it is a new issue on VR II that didn't exist on the original VR. And then, it deserves whatever weight the potential buyer chooses to assign to it -- no more no less -- and this will vary from person to person. No one else can make the call for her / him.

For me, the long-end focus breathing wasn't a big deal. For others, it might be.

I don't find a problem with vignetting but the extreme corners are slightly soft. Not an issue for portraits or most sports, is an issue for landscape or most architecture.

I got my VR1 for £800 second hand off ebay. Is awesome.
