New option to control the brightness of focal points (I assume to make them brighter) and AF-assist on speedlights will come on at any focal length. I think Nikon has been reading DPreview forums.

Is that all we get!? :) The vignette control looks pretty cool, but I don't have any of those lenses. I'll probably get the most use out of the faster shutter speed options under auto ISO. Very happy about that update!

So thank the reply.
And the D3 has the new firmware!
The focal point brighter is a good tool.
Thanks once more!

"focal point brighter is a good tool" ...yeah, I didn't have too much of a problem before, but +2 focus point brightness is great!

The update's great. I hate the brighter focus points, though - the other focus points get illuminated, too, which is really distracting.

Ha - in their instructions, it says:
Confirming the firmware
1. Turn on the D3
2. Press the MENU button and select "Firmware Version" from the setup menu. The camera's firmware version will be displayed.
3. Turn off the D300
But I don't have a D300! What should I do??!

Somehow, I feel odd upgrading firmware from a site named "custhelp.com", without anything Nikonny in the domain. So I drilled down from nikonusa.com to find it here:
support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin/nikonusa.cfg/php/enduser/st...
If that link doesn't work, then try starting at:
support.nikonusa.com/
Now to d/l and upgrade for brighter, shinier focus points. They are hard to see at times.

The vignette control also works on the 70-200 , so its not just the listed lenses in the pdf.
also , the blowing out of faces when in matrix mode is gone . i can now shoot social events as im used to .
i wonder what quiet features were also added

according to Rob Galbraith's site:
- The range of settings available for ISO sensitivity settings>ISO sensitivity auto control>Minimum shutter speed in the shooting menu has been increased from 1/250–1 s to 1/4000–1 s.
Can anyone confirm this?

Yes....
Modifications Enabled with upgrade of A and B firmware from ver. 1.00 to ver.1.10:
-A "Vignette Control" item has been added to the "Shooting Menu".
-A focus point brightness item has been added to the "a6: Focus point illumination" setting in the "Autofocus" category in the "Custom Settings".
-The "Highlights" playback display option has been moved from "Display mode > Basic photo info > Highlights" in the playback menu to "Display Mode > Detailed photo info > Highlights".
-When shutter speed and/or aperture are locked when shooting in LiveView mode, using the "L" (command lock) button, an "L" icon is now displayed in the camera monitor.
-The size and color of "Demo" displayed in the monitor with playback, when "No memory card?" in the "Custom Settings" is set to "Enable Release", have been modified.
-The range of settings available for "ISO sensitivity settings > ISO sensitivity auto control > Minimum shutter speed" in the Shooting Menu has been increased from 1/250th - 1s to 1/4000s - 1s.
-When a compatible Speedlight or Wireless Speedlight Commander is used, the AF assist illuminator now lights regardless of focal length.
-When shooting in hand-held LiveView mode and the frame is magnified prior to autofocusing, operation has been modified so that display returns to the magnified display rather than full-frame display.
-In some rare cases, white balance was not accurately calculated for images captured at a shutter speed of around 1/4s in P and A exposure modes. This issue has been resolved.
-When attempting to crop images at an aspect ratio of 4:3 using the "Trim" option in the "Retouch" menu, the cropped image did not have an accurate 4:3 aspect ratio. This issue has been resolved.

It always did! It's only the range of minimum shutter speeds that has changed.

The vignette control works on many lenses, I would imagine. But does the Low to High setting affect EV values in the corners or the radii?
I tested it on the 50/1.4 and there was a noticible difference with the High setting (from Off), but not as much as expected with a setting labeled "High."

Ok I found the answer to my own question. There is no diffrance. All D3's worldwide are exactly the same.
Now happily updated too :)

I haven't had an email, maybe they're a bit slower than the grapevine. Incidentally, does anyone know why there's an A and a B firmware file?

The A file says: D3 Firmware A Copyright Nikon Corp,
while the B file says: Softune REALOS/FR is Realtime OS for FR Family, based on micro-ITRON COPYRIGHT(C) FUJITSU LIMITED 1994-1999, it looks like the main processor is a Fujitsu device.
I've also found the following strings in the B file, suggesting that several models at least partially share the same OS code:
NIKON D70s
NIKON D70
NIKON D100
NIKON D200
NIKON D300
NIKON D2Hs
NIKON D2H
NIKON D2X
NIKON D2Xs

Oh crap, all this time I thought I had two dual core Xeons in my D3.
Got it updated with the new firmware and can't wait to test it out tomorrow. I thought the focus point would have been brighter? Not sure if it done anything to improve mine, not that I was complaining about them. Is it possible that some D3s were sent out with the brightness turned down while others were OK?

Whoa, axelr, is that for real? That's a bit of a scoop! I guess those are the large, medium and small sizes for FX, 5:4 crop and the DX crop.
So the answer to my question about A and B files is that Nikon hides future product announcements in the B file?

d3x are you serious? im taking it a s joke =D
-ive read earlier that the upgrade was suppose to make the focus points more pronounced. im assuming that means seeing the un-activated focus point better. do you notice any diff?
-vignette control..now thats an admission that its a concern with the cam. not seeing any lately tho.

>im taking it a s joke
The folks writing the firmware with built-in 24.4 MP D3X support were probable not joking. Only time will tell if this will materialize as an actual product, but I don't see the D3 as the end of all Nikon efforts on the subject...
>do you notice any diff
You can now set the brightness to -1, 0, +1, +2. My camera was on -1 and I put it on 0. The change is subtle but +2 definitely is a change.
>now thats an admission that its a concern with the cam
No. It's an admission that this is a concern with some lenses. Nikon says the affected lenses are listed in a manual addendum, which I did not find yet so it's hard to say what lenses exactly, altought the 70-200 seems to be a good candidate.
