But what about the lens?
I'm in the same boat as SPE.

Totally agree, the D700 can wait, my D300 is only one year old, loads of life left in her yet.
The post begs the questions as regards to the lens purchase now or later. If only some Nikon insider could offer us a pearl of wisdom.

If you need or want it now, get it. If you can wait, then you don't need it. ;-)
I bought it when I got the D700 last July. Added 1.7 TC first, then 1.4 TC recently.
I haven't worried about vignetting, and any that might exist would simply frame the subject -- not a bad thing (for me, that is).
I can see where it may be an issue for others. Only you know where it falls for you.
No one can advise you re when to buy: rumors are rumors -- no announcements yet -- no matter how "reliable" the rumor sources.

Buy it. You won't regret it. On the D300 it is superb. On the D3 the lens is superb. You'll likely have the lens far longer than any camera body.

as said over and over ..the differences between the VR and a potential "VR II" will be nominal, mostly geared towards better performance on FF sensors.
just buy the damn thing and be done with it.

My father has actually seen a Nikon Australia price list which is effective as of Feb 1st, and let me say, I'm glad I have all the gear I need for the moment!
The price rises here are quite significant!

I've got the same dilemma about the 85mm 1.4D Yes, my dealer also tried to panic me into buying this now as there would be a price rise due to the Yen. But as the markets go up and down who will be able to tell where the Yen will be in a couple of months from now? One thing is for sure though, Nikon will sooner or later bring out new lenses with new technology. If this is worth waiting for, as well as speculating on the Yen, is everyone's personal 'gamble' :-)

The 70-200 IS flawless on the D300. My advice to a lot of people who "wait" and get stuck in analysis paralysis is, the longer you wait, the less great shots you can take, now. Take advantage of what tools are available to you now, instead of playing the waiting game.

If you buy the 70-200/2.8VRG NOW, you'll regret it for the rest of your ... wait,
If you DON'T buy the 70-200/2.8VRG NOW, you'll regret it for the rest of your ... wait -- it's a great lens, and I don't regret using it since 2006!

But if you have higher demands--such as a full-frame sensor camera (D700, D3)--such that you are concerned about dealing with significant vignetting and notable softness around the gills, then one would think that a new model would address those issues better than the long-in-the-tooth current 70-200/2.8 lens.
There's no telling when or if a new lens will be introduced.

i have mostly FF glass and you would be surprised how much of it vignettes on the D3, it seems to be part of the price you pay for FF sensors. even some of the DX glass has the same problem on DX bodies, and plenty of people have complained of vignetting on the new 24-70 nikkor.
assuming the eventual new model will be perfect is going to result in dissappointment and a much lighter wallet. just buy the current model and get to know it inside out, i seriously doubt you will regret the purchase.

Are there any indications of official Nikon price rises in the USA?

I was told that any new products would be announced in Feb and likely released in the fall. Then it may be in short supply then so you could be waiting for almost a year for this lens. If you can wait that long, you can take the chance that a new version will be announced and hope that they actually improve it.
I had the same discussion in December and decided to buy it now. The new version may NOT be coming this year...

I went to WarehouseExpress (in UK) on Saturday and the price rises have hi there. The D3 body has gone up around £400, the 24-70 around £200, etc etc. Big increases. The 70-200 has 'only' gone up by £100 to £1286 - makes me wonder why not a bigger hike? Waiting for a new model to come out perhaps?
Anyway, I'm just glad I've got most of the kit I "need" :)

Well yes of course, but either way the prices are going up. The salesperson said the Canon prices were going to go up something this week, I've not checked though.
Either way, prices going up and salaries not following suit is a bit of a bummer!
