Sharpest apertures on Nikon 50mm f1.8??

tommyd80 [deleted] says:

Hello :)
What have you found to be the sharpest setting on the 50mm f1.8??
I have found that shooting at f1.8 is it not very sharp

What would be the best aperture to shoot at doing portraits, to get the most definition??

Please advise 50mm f1.8 users
:)

I read somewhere that it was f/4. I can't remember where I read that or why, but it got into my head somehow.

Why not just try it?

If you really need a hint - try f5.6 / f8

I tend to get serious sharpness out of this lens at around f/5, but have done well in general from f/2.8 and up . . .

In the link below, they say "f/4-16". Scroll down to the bottom of the page for the conclusion.

I find the lens is pretty sharp all the time - sometimes at 1.8, the dof is so shallow, it can trick you into thinking it's not sharp. However, the issue is usually more of a very shallow / narrow focus plane.

This lens is so much fun to shoot with, I suggest you just shoot a whole bunch and figure out what is best for your preferred subjects / lighting.

At depends a little on which 50mm you have:
this site shows a few of them. The new "G" 1.4 appears to be an improvement.
the 50 starts to sing from F4 upto F16. Colour fringing is bad wide open, this is improved by F2.8

In almost every lens of the world , the most sharpest aperture is in f/5.6 f/8, so try it

Sure, every lens that begin in 2,8 or 4, but in this case don't confuse definition or sharpness with deep of field, look this link: www.photozone.de/nikon--nikkor-aps-c-lens-tests/217-nikko...
