AF-S NIKKOR 50mm F1.4G

What primes are next? :)
Andrew Ball Posted 17 years ago
hell yes, im pumped for them to release some new primes. but not do i wait or just go buy the 24-70 to put on my D700. I have the 50mm 1.8D now i wonder if this will be any better then the current 1.4
JRPhotographyBC Posted 17 years ago
Interesting... This would certainly start to fill that gap of lenses that the D40 & D60 are unable to autofocus with.
And would be great for us pros that want a quieter & faster focusing lens.
Shadow Hunter Posted 17 years ago
I'll appreciate being able to grab the ring and focus manually without flipping the switch!
just Mike is fine Posted 17 years ago
like JRPhotographyBC said, the quieter and faster focusing will make it worth picking this up. It also has a 9-bladed aperture (vs. a 7-bladed in the previous generation) making bokeh just that much more delicious.

I'm personally hoping (praying!) for an update of the 85mm 1.4

I'd be perfectly content if those 2 were the only announcements from Nikon.

It might be good though if you didn't pass the picture off as your own...
Kid_SBTG Posted 17 years ago
nice simple and fast.
i'm excited to see some products of the 50 since the 60 was highly rated.
if anything, 60 is worth the money. i would know. so i hope the 50 will match up to par with the 60 (:

hmm a 35mm f/1.4 AF-S (non-G?:D) would be great....
Antonio Dell'Elce Posted 17 years ago
correction: f/1.2 would be even much better....

I'm asking Santa for a 24mm f/1.4 (or even f/2) AF-S prime with Nano and 9 rounded blade aperture. If Santa is anything like the lottery fairy I think I'm screwed.

Shadow Hunter - I'll be adding the 50mm f/1.4G to the tag list soon. :)

Hopefully I'll have more Nikkor AF-S primes to add as well!
Shadow Hunter Posted 17 years ago
Thanks, Mike! Kudos on the group, and the lens searchable pool as well. :) From your lips to Nikon's ears on more primes...

"Interesting... This would certainly start to fill that gap of lenses that the D40 & D60 are unable to autofocus with. "

I think they would be more likely to get a 50 f1.8.
kukkurovaca Posted 17 years ago
Yes, although they'd be better off with a 35mm f/2, I think.

The 50mm f/1.4G has been added to the tag list.

Now where are all those bokehlicious photos using this new lens? ;)
Tilden Katz Posted 17 years ago
Nikon didn't let me take any.

I've been to Photokina yesterday and there were only two samples. And both only on display. The rep said, he wasn't sure, the sample were real lenses at all. Disappointing. So I could only take some shots of it.

Nikkor AF-S 50mm/1.4G

The front element is recessed into the barrel quite a bit. And it'the front element ismaller than on the current 50/1.4.

Nikkor AF-S 50mm/1.4G

This is how it looks on a D700. My stream has more.
.jasper Posted 17 years ago
^^ the size seems to balance well with the 700.

you should try again today and see if they'd let you use it :)
Kid_SBTG Posted 17 years ago
so anyone able to actually use it? if so pics! :)
radiorabbi Posted 17 years ago
My understanding is the lens won't be available to the general public until December so unless somebody has a prerelease unit for testing/Evaluation we won't see any pics for a while

Here you go, sample photos, taken with a 50mm f/1.4G AF-S lens.

Exposed at f/1.4 - f/2 - f/2.8 they show that this particular uncalibrated pre-production unit I had access to backfocused on my D3, but the sharpness, small amount of CA and coma at f/1.4 clearly show this one will blow the older 50mm versions out of the water once it's out.

Looks amazing - I think I'm gonna wait in line for this one ;-) Already sold my old D-version.
igorxa Posted 17 years ago
wow, thanks for the photos! now i'm definitely not regretting pre-ordering this lens through my local photo store. i still want to see how it handles points of light at the edge of the frame wide open, but i can already tell it's going to be better than the af-d version.
LeoHorta Posted 17 years ago
Vilhelm Sjostrom, nice samples with the new 1.4 G. I think the CA is more controlled than AF-D version.. however in a metallic details (second photo) on a D3 strap clip you can see some blue CA... but I like the sharpness.

Any news on when this lens will be available?
