[Q] Whale watching in Húsavík ?

view profile

Ludovic Hirlimann  Pro User  says:

So I trying to plan my next trip to Iceland - that should be in august around the marathon time. One thing I regret not doing last time was whale watching. So Tourism Marketing says I should do that in Húsavík, I also remember that it is doiable from Reykjavik and Keyflavik.
I've recently did whale watching in Greenland and only saw one type of whale megaptera novaeangliae.
I would like to see other types of whales, anybody knows which types are visible in Húsavík, Reykjavik and Keflavik ?
While I'm at it what's the best week to see interesting things whales wise - last week or so of August or First week of September ?

Hello, I am Bruce  Pro User  says:

I've been on two trips with North Sailing in Húsavík. We saw humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) both times (plus porpoise and minke whale one year and white sided dolphins the other). Other people have seen blue whales, fin whales, and killer whales (see the company's logbook).

The first time (2007) was in good weather from the sailing boat Haukur. After doing some birdwatching we watched whales that had been spotted by another boat from the same company.

The second time (2008), the weather was bad so Haukur did not sail. Instead we went on one of the other boats. It took a long time to find the whales, but once we found them the boat stayed close for quite a long time.

I recommend allowing a few days in your itinery so you can go when the weather is best. The sailing boat trip is excellent. You should have a good time even if you don't see a big whale. The crew on the boats are very knowledgable and friendly.

If you do go Whale watching in Iceland and get good photographs of Humpback whale flukes would you add them to the flickr group:

Allied Whales to adopt Humpback whale flukes

You are invited to add this image (and any other you have of Humpback whale flukes) to Humpback whale flukes

I work as a flukematcher for Allied Whale which holds the catalog for whales in the North Atlantic. The Eastern North Atlantic whales are under represented in the catalog... and your descriptions of the rough weather conditions may explain why. But please add your photos with the location and time to the group it would be greatly appreciated.

I went whale watching in 2006 and had a reasonable outing. We saw several minke whales and some white sided dolphins.

Speaking to people at our campsite, one said they'd seen a humpback the day before and someone else said they'd seen a blue whale the previous week. That was a bit annoying I can tell you.

My main disappointment was not having a long lens at the time.

Hi,

we went whale watching from Husavik in July 2006 and were lucky enough to see humpback and blue whales. There were also a few dolphins passing by rapidly. The weather was also lousy...
