I like the new one, I think. It always takes time to adjust. I didn't like the "old" one when it was new, either. But I do like the rotating "your groups" photos in the current page, because it gave me a reminder and an easy way to comment on my groups' photos even when I hadn't added a photo to it. I would miss that if it weren't on the proposed page. Maybe it is, though hidden, and I just haven't seen it.

I find the new one absolutely cumbersome, overly complicated, poorly designed, rife with potential for misuse and theft, and completely disappointing.
I am not opposed to change and growth, but this is clearly an effort that was not thought through or done with respect for Flickr's paying customers.

I agree with doorsixteen so much I've changed all my images to private until this is resolved.
I hit the magnify button and it takes me to the new Lightbox where it allows the viewer to right click, hit view image which opens the large image in its own window and then save the larger view by right clicking and hitting save as.
I have my settings set so most people cannot see a larger view or right click for a reason. This new feature as it stands goes around that. I noticed this in all of one minute looking this over. God only knows what will happen or other hidden things I'll find as I look it over in more detail.
and in case you think I'm lying I've done the test with a contacts images who has downloading disabled:

I completely agree, it is more complicated than it needs to be. I agree, I think they'll lose a lot of flickr pro members, people wont be re purchasing pro.
I agree as well that its certainly not right to be able to download the images. Flickr is for viewing, not so stealing other peoples images and saving them.

I prefer the older one.
I do not care about maps because I usually forget where I took a photo. This is not important to me.
I liked the idea of the Admin invite and comment done at the same time.
All the groups and tags showed up at one time and I do not have to click here and there in the older version.
In the new version, I do not like ...
- the add to groups or set feature is hidden with all the other things under one button.
- the map takes up preference to my photostream.
- tags are in 2 columns
- groups are hidden
- Admin invites and comments are done separately and appear separately in your photosteam which means you will end up with 100's of extra comments under an image

All of us, naturally feel comfortable with the familiar but I see vast improvements here.

But I'm not going to say that Flickr should not put it out just because of those who don't like it. I just want there to be an option that allows the users to choose whether they want the new format or not.
So people should stop justifying it and why it's good and why it's crap. Just give us the option to use it or not, and a whole lot of us will be quieter.

There needs a lot more work and tweaks to make this redesign acceptable. As a designer myself I find that a lot of the new layout is unacceptable from a user experience and design standpoint. It's simply not as thought-out as it should be, which is a shame. Then there are obviously a lot of serious security and privacy problems that need to be addressed and very quickly.

I see vast improvements here as well. However, I also see some really poor conceptual design. I'm on the fence right now. It's a nice little fence. I built it with my own two hands, with planks rescued from an old barn in Denmark. Nice view. Think I'll just stay here awhile, especially since the option to not use the new flickr won't be forthcoming. This is the way it's going to be from now on (once it's out of beta) for all users.

Meh. I like the light box. Don't care much about geotagging. The geotagging feature is WAY too prominent. We should have the option to disable or minimize this. Dislike the new comment layout. Old comment layout (with boxes) is much easier to browse through.
It would be nice if we could have the option of sticking with the old layout or only enabling those new features that we wanted.
Slightly OT, but I've been on Flickr for a long time, and witnessed many changes and controversies. For the first time, I am seriously considering not renewing my Pro account. I wonder if I'm the only one?

Some of the features on the new look are very nice.
I personally do not like that many of the often used actions are now hidden behind dropdown buttons. Please make them readily available, as on the present version. The features I am especially missing as quick links are the "Add Note", "Add to Group", "Add to Set" - while when viewing others' images, I would like to see the "Add Note" and the "Add to Gallery" shortcuts. Also, the View as Slideshow should not be removed as a quick link.
I know, these features are available on the Beta when we click on one of the dropdown buttons, but why would you make things slower for the user? There is enough space above the larger image to add all those links back.
For now, I'll keep the old view with the user friendly quick links to the favourite actions.

The extra size of the photo , black background option ,
alone would already make this a great update .

Hate it for the reasons doorsixteen & myjuditz so eloquently explained.
Right now it would be easier to delete my pro account (paid through April 2011) than to make over 11,000 photos private. Especially if Flickr makes more changes that would make it possible to make them public again. Seems like I'm doing a lot of work to maintain a service I'm paying for....
I've had enough photos stolen in the past, that at least I took the time tonight to make over 3,000 images Friends only. Of course, this means that my best/favorite shots aren't viewable to any people I know in real life who I might want to send a link to, because they're not a Flickr member.
So this just give me more reason to use Facebook instead of Flickr. Sad to say, Facebook is now suddenly seeming like a bastion of privacy when it comes to photos compared to the new Flickr layout.
Hate it. Worst Flickr change so far.

I want to keep my original Flickr look as my default for as long as I am a paying customer.
The new is fine if offered as an option for those who want it.
But consider those who are comfortable with the current layouts and want to keep it this way forever. Those of us who like the original layouts will probably continue to pay. If not, then shopping elsewhere may become an option.

I like the larger size of the image, the "lightbox" option, and the "filmstrip". What I don't like is that the new page seems much more busy than the old one. One thing I always liked about flickr, compared to for example picasaweb, is that the flickr foto pages were simple and un-clattered. The map right next to the picture is definitely a distraction for me. The small unobtrusive icons above the photo were now replaced by a huge dropdown button, which is both harder to use than the icons, and more distracting.
For those who complain about the new "lightbox" option: there is no way you will ever be able to stop me from viewing your pictures on black background, short of making them private or not posting them on the internet at all. The new page just make it slightly, but only very slightly easier. As far as the large size, it was always possible to download any public picture in large size. If you don't want people to have the large size, scale it down before uploading it. That way you will also have a better control over scaling algorithm and sharpening.
I like the suggestion to make the "lightbox" background configurable by both photographer and viewer. If you let photographer to choose the default, and user to change it, I think it make most people happy. I don't think it would be a problem, since it would only affect the lightbox view, not general flickr pages.

Old one is better. New one needs multiple clicks to do simple things (e.g., view EXIF) and very few clicks to do things you want to prevent (e.g., download large image). New/old selector is backwards (new images should be on right). Tags are harder to read when in run-on sentence.

design wise, it looks nice, but it really needs the license info directly under the image as asked for years in many forums on flickr. putting it after tags means that lots of tags will just push it down, lots of groups will push it down.
it's got to be displayed with the image at all times, including in All Size pages. seriously. how'd you guys miss this?

I don't like it because it breaks every Greasemonkey script I have come to rely on.
I also don't like that it makes stealing photos easy.
I like the larger sized photo. I like the "view on black" function. The shortcuts are nice.
I dislike not showing the entire group and set list of where the photo resides (...and xx more groups), show them ALL. I absolutely HATE extra clicks to get things done (the main reason I'm unhappy the Greasemonkey scripts no longer work).
The map integration is clever, but I'm not entirely happy with it.
I don't like that the buddy icon is smaller next to the comments. I want the original larger sized icon used.
I don't like the way the tag list is shown all clumped together (bring the globe back, I don't like the "hover over" popup link).
Provide a way for the user to choose which page they want to use - old or new.

I like the new geotagging thingie.
I like the new "Add to Set" dialog with the ability to search sets. I don't like that it takes a menu click-then-scroll to get to it rather than just a button click. Ditto for "Add to Group".
I don't like that only a few tags are visible without a click. Makes checking my tags a lot more tedious. Ditto for sets and groups. On a slow internet connection this interactive stuff really sucks. (Like they said about commercials: too long to sit through, to short for a trip to the bathroom.)
The Large size being available bothers me. I've heard it was available before through the slideshow and API, but as I never used either I didn't know that. The thought of replacing 11,000 pictures with smaller versions (and uploading new copies of the originals) is rather upsetting — and that's what I get the impression Flickr expects me to do.

I like the new flickr, the larger photos, the lightbox, and well, I can certainly adapt to learning the features. I like that people can view my photos larger, perhaps add an additional safeguard for those who want to prevent downloading such as adding a watermark feature that is "optional" when you have downloads turned off. Even allow for custom watermarking that would even be cooler.
Also background options for the lightbox, black, white, gray.

Love, LOVE the new flckr! Thank you for adding a black background option. So much easier to showcase your photos. And THANK YOU for making the photos larger and the comments/icons smaller!! That has always bugged me.
Can you also change the view of the main photostream page? It is so busy and there are no good options to organize how you want your photos viewed. Maybe add a "themes" option so I can change the background to black? I prefer the look of smugmug.com but stayed with flickr b/c the prints are better quality.
Don't like the huge drop-down menu that covers the photo. Like the map feature a lot...is there a batch operation, though? Tedious to do it photo by photo. Very cool to see it on the page. Connects me to photos even more by seeing immediately where they were taken.
I love it! Change is good!

Guys, it's horrible. Here's why:
My uploader often fails, and I have duplicate copies of photos. Now, I cannot tell from the organiser whether photos are identical, so I need to do this from photo pages. So here's what I do:
I open up all the possible photos by middle-clicking in firefox to open them in tabs.
Then I control tab through the tabs, clicking on delete (always in same place, no need to move mouse) and then pressing enter, for relevant photos.
This process is a lot harder now - I need to go through the new annoying menu system, which involves more mouse movements (killer for those of us with arthritis) and in general more steps.
Same applies for seeing original size of a photo. Used to take two steps. Now it takes three.
Plus it was better to have photo titles at the top, so they are always in the same place. At the moment, I am removing duplicates. Some are called like "20091206-145450 Jenny at Tumbalong Park" others are called like "IMG-2721". I know that I need to delete the latter. Doing this in bulk is easy in the old page because the title is always inteh same place. However, as photos may be vertical or horizontal format, in the new page the title moves all over the place from tab to tab.
Please, make it so that information items are in consistent visual placement locations from photo to photo. Also, why did you introduce all of these extra steps for the mostr common functions (for me anyway) ? This is meant to be faster ? How ?
Please don't introduce the new page as currently planned. It may be good for viewers who just want to view photos. It is horrible for those of us who do serious comparison, deduplication and editing of our collections.
Best wishes,
Robert

Please do not change the old photo page format. I believe, as do many others, that it perfect and cannot be improved upon. I have played with the test version and frankly it is complex and not user friendly. IE The Action tab is simply awful. Leave the small icons that are above the photo alone...Burying them under another menu layer adds complexity. At very least allow me to customize this feature to allow me to place what icons I choose to sit as they were before above the image. I have left hundreds of instructions for students and novice users in each description box explaining how to enlarge the photo. If you adopt this new page I'll have to amend several hundred descriptions If it aint broke don't fix it! Flickr undoubtably will lose existing members over this. Perhaps I'll be one of them.

The old interface grew up a bit at a time from the site inception, and I suppose we all became accustomed to its old face.
So now we have a facelift, and a brave attempt to redesign the whole thing at once, like the Housemann street plan for Paris. At the time it was impossibly modern and derided, but who would want it any different now?
I like the new look and functionality, and as a work in progress it is great. I value the opportunity for all of us to have a say and not just have it plonked on us one day as a take it or leave it corporate Microsoft style non choice.

I agree with all the issues regarding image downloading. Rather than marking all the images private, if this isn't resolved, I'm likely to simply close my account. It's not that I feel MY images are worth stealing, but rather that FLICKR doesn't seem to be concerned with the IP rights of their existing customer base.
From a design perspective, the absence of a left-side margin (at least in Safari) is disturbing. Having images and text that butt against the side of the window that way is very amateurish. C'mon, guys. Margins and padding is there for a reason. Use it.
Further, the default page size is too wide. Frankly, I don't WANT a browser window being forced to take up that much screen real estate just so I can avoid horizontal scrolling. Remember, a lot of people use laptops, FLICKR's old format was friendly to my 13" MacBook. The new "improved" version? Not so much.

I don't understand why Flickr won't compromise.
Clearly they've got massive amounts of people arguing on both sides. I'm not going to say one version is better than the other. But many paying customers are on either side of this issue arguing. So instead of arguing about the new features, oh the map is bad, no the size is bad, oh the spacing is terrible! Why can't they compromise and everyone would be so much happier. If they gave us the CHOICE to use it or not, we can stop arguing to each other and everyone would get what they want. Even Flickr - they would get happier and more satisfied customers.
It all seems so simple, but Flickr says they "can't" which means they are unable, they do not have the ability. And that is a complete lie! They can do anything they want, they give us the option to change the layout of the first page of our photostream don't they? Do they hear people bickering about if the medium size with collections is better than the small size with set? No! Because everyone can choose the layout according to their preferences. So please! Just give us a choice and everyone will be happy. And don't say you "can't" because if you really wanted to, you could.

There are things I like and things I don't like about the new page. I definitely hope they give us the option to use or not. I don't mind change if it's to improve but at the moment the new page seems to be full of bugs and I rather continue using the old one.

Like Freelancer_Imaging I have also changed all my images to private and removed the from groups until this is resolved.
As the copyright holder of my images I have the legal right to decide what size I want my images to be displayed at.
I am not about to allow Flickr to just walk all over me and decide "by default" or "automatically" what size my images will be displayed at without my explicit consent.

I definitely don't like the new Flickr.
I don't like that there is no margin or padding round the whole screen. Everything reaches to the very left and right of my monitor. It looks awful!
I don't like the position of the map.
I don't like that no Greasemonkey scripts work any longer. I am sure not every developer will update his scripts. I need the scripts to admin my groups, one with more than 22.000 members. If they won't work any more, I will not be able to manage them as before.
This new feature will destroy Flickr for me. It will destroy the handling of my groups.
I just bought a new pro account. I think this was the last one.

I'm not one to complain about companies "moving forward" and upgrading usually, but I think this change needs some additional work.
I always directed my visitors to click on the magnifying glass to get to "All Sizes" ... and now the magnifying glass is a non-intuitive "View larger on black background"?! Since when does a magnifying glass mean "View the same image on a black background?" Definitely should revert to magnifying glass being a direct link to all sizes, and a new icon for the lightbox.
I do like the larger default image sizes, I don't mind the map at the top since I wish more people would geotag (why don't camera manufacturers put GPS in the devices?!) but the user should be able to define what his photostream page looks like, turning on and off features of the new design.
Overall I like a lot of your changes, I definitely think when you launch a preview like this you should build a forum to go with it... with sub-topics for each major element change in your design. Let people discuss various topics (All sizes, magnify, lightbox would be one, the map view would be one, the larger image would be one, etc) and you'd really get good feedback from your users in an organized fashion.
Of course you're going to move forward and launch the new design, as you should! But the earlier you get feedback from your users, the better your final product is going to be... and an amazing product you do have! Thanks again for all of your work!

I forgot: I totally agree with the others regarding images downloads. The owners (copyright holders!) must be able to allow or disallow the downloading of their work!

the new version has good and bad features. I think they implemented too many at once thus generating many problems that will take a long time to fix...if they are fixed at all.
They probably have a large staff they pay to come up with new ideas....keeners who want to strut their stuff...but not always in the best interest of the paying customer!
I love the light box view...if they fix that!
I hate that with the bigger image and showing favs along with comments, I now have many pages on a single photo to scroll through to read comments, add to groups etc. eg: before a 100 comments would take 2 pages...now takes at least 4!!
I spend a lot of time on this site and look for ways to decrease scrolling and clicking which aggravate my elbow and wrist problems!
I can't uses many scripts and applications as before either. I'd like that choice back!
