This is a group to know a little bit more of New Light, an NGO located in Kolkata, India. The mission of New Light is to promote gender equality through education and life-skill training, thereby reduce harm caused by violence and abuse to women and young children.

If you have some photos of the children of New Light or something related, you can post here.

If you want to go to New Light in Kolkata you can mail us. We travel there at least one month a year.

New Light is located at Kalighat (Ward 83) in Kolkata, a five minute walk from Nirmal Hriday, Mother Teresa's home for the dying destitute. This is one of the oldest red light areas of Kolkata housing sex workers from the city, the districts and neighbouring countries like Nepal and Bangladesh.

New Light, a secular nonprofit charitable trust, set up a creche-cum-night-shelter to protect and educate young girls, children and women at high risk. The program has been operating for the last six years and provides a safe shelter, educational opportunities, recreational facilities, health care and legal aid for the children, girls and women in their community.

New Light has evolved into a comprehensive community development project with a special thrust at HIV/ AIDS prevention,care and treatment. The demographic composition of New Light consists of women from Kolkata and its districts (70%), from Hindi-speaking areas of the country (20%) and from Nepal and Bangladesh (10%). Women from all religious communities are invited to take part in this program and the ratio is representative of the rest of India.

New Light does not work toward influencing legislation or public policy as it does not support legalisation of prostitution. It believes in the fact that most women involved in the sex trade are victims of circumstances and would choose a different life if they have the opportunity to do so. New Light does not involve or support any political group or their representatives.

Este es un grupo para conocer un poco más sobre New Light, una ONG localizada en Calcuta, India. La misión de New Light es promover la igualdad de género a través de la educación y de las vivencias personales de forma que se reduzca el daño causado por la violencia y el abuso a las mujeres y a los niños.

New Light está en el barrio rojo de Kalighat (Ward 83) en Calcuta, a 5 minutos andando desde el hogar para indigentes de la Madre Teresa. Esta es una de las zonas de prostitución más antiguas de Calcuta y de países vecinos como Nepal o Bangladesh.

New Light es una organización sin ánimo de lucro creada como un refugio para proteger y educar a niñas jóvenes, niños y mujeres adolescentes en en alto riesgo de caer en redes de prostitución. El programa ha estado funcionando desde hace seis años y proporciona un abrigo seguro, oportunidades educativas, instalaciones recreativas, cuidado médico y soporte legal para los niños, niñas y mujeres de su comunidad.

New Light ha desarrollado un proyecto conjunto con la comunidad en la que se instala haciendo especial incapié en la prevención, cuidado y tratamiento del SIDA. La composición demográfica de New Light consiste en en mujeres de Calcuta y sus distritos (70%), de zonas del país en las que se habla Hindi (20%) y de Nepal y Bangladesh (10%). Mujeres de todas las comunidades religiosa participan en este programa y su porcentaje es representativo del resto de India.

New Light cree que que la mayoría de las mujeres implicadas en el comercio del sexo son víctimas de las circunstancias y elegirían una vida diferente si tuvieran la oportunidad de hacerlo.

New Light no apoya ni está influenciado por ningún grupo político o sus representantes.
