High end point&shoot or low end DSLR?
|
I have gotten out of photography lately, sold my Rebel XT, and now the only camera I have is a very cheap Samsung P&S, and the picture quality is pretty bad.
I'm looking to get back into photography and I'm wondering if I should go with a high end point & shoot like a Canon G10 or a low end DSLR like a Nikon D40. Your thoughts?

What do you want to photograph, and how large a camera do you want to carry?

it all depends on what you want to do.. if you want a camera you can carry in your bag. and always have with you get a point and shoot.. if you want some versitility and dont might lugging around a big camera go for the DSLR.

You've had the Rebel XT, so you know what it can do. What made you part with it? Was there some thing that you were dissatisfied with? Maybe a point and shoot is what you need.
I have the G9. It's super for travel, captures in RAW, can accept a Speedlite, and can capture movies. It is also not threatening allowing me to take some shots that a DSLR would get me shooed away from.
That being said, I have missed many shots due to the shutter lag of a P&S.

I sold my XT and all of my lenses/flashes because I had lost my passion for photography and wanted to free up money for other hobbies. I have looked at the G10 and was very impressed. I'm wondering if I can find a good deal on a used G9 somewhere.

If you had a DSLR, you might feel a little limited by a point and shoot - that said, the G10 and G9 are very versatile cameras, with full manual capabilities, and even a flash hot-shoe, so you can even get triggers and fire off-camera strobes. They're pretty slick. And they fit in a pocket. Big bonus.
