About Newry and Mourne Photography

Newry lies in the most south-eastern part of both Ulster and Northern Ireland.
It is a large town with city status in Northern Ireland. The River Clanrye, which runs through the city, forms the historic border between County Armagh and County Down: Newry was included entirely in the latter by the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898. It is 34 miles (55 km) from Belfast and 67 miles (108 km) from Dublin. Newry had a population of approximately 27,430 at the 2001 Census, while Newry and Mourne Council Area had a population of 87,058. Newry was founded in 1144 alongside a Cistercian monastery and is one of Northern Ireland's oldest towns.

This is a truly beautiful area- a land of great contrast and diversity.Few areas of similar extent can show such a variety of landforms, topography, coastal forms, human history and such a bold contrast of mountains, lowlands and sea. Both the mournes and the ring of gullion areas have been designated as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)

The Mournes
The mournes were formed 50million years ago. These mostly rounded mountain peaks and dramatic granite outcrops. They are unusual in that their summits are grouped together being only seven miles apart.
Irelands answer to the great wall of china is the Mourne Wall, a dry wall which stretches for 22miles and was built between 1904 to 1922,linking 15 peaks and is on average 8 feet high and 3feet thick- a momument to the skill of the men that built it.

Newry City
With historical origins newry is one of the oldest towns in ireland and can trace its origins back to St Patrick who reputedly planted a yew tree at the head of the strand, from which the town gets its name. The city of Newry is one of the constituent cities of the Dublin-Belfast corridor and sits at the entry to the "Gap of the North", close to the border with the Republic of Ireland. It grew as a market town and a garrison and became a port in 1742 when it was linked to Lough Neagh by the first summit-level canal in Britain or Ireland.Newry has long been an important centre of trade because of its position between Belfast and Dublin.

The Ring Of Gullion
South Armagh with its beautiful countryside is to the west of newry. The drumlin landscape around Crossmaglen and the Ring of Gullion are steeped in Celtic mythology and this area is famed for it rich cultural heritage and the numerous prehistoric and early christian sites. This magical landscape has been illustrated through the ages in local literature, poetry, music, history and art.
