About Nathan Joyce

JOYCE, Nathan Theodore, 26, passed from this earth on September 1, 2008 following a long, courageous battle with melanoma. He died at his childhood home in Richmond, Va., surrounded by his loving family. Born December 11, 1981, Nathan was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Alfonso Sandoval; and paternal grandmother, Theodora Joyce. He is survived by his loving parents, L.E. "Butch" and Judy Joyce of Chesterfield, Va.; sister, Sarah Joyce; and nephew, Thomas Joyce of Norfolk, Va.; brother, Derrick Lefler of Princeton, W.Va.; girlfriend, Courtney Klein of Richmond, Va.; grandmother, Velma Sandoval of Princeton, W.Va.; and grandfather, Earl Joyce of Fieldale, Va.

Most recently of Orlando, Fla., Nathan lived many years in "The Fan" area of Richmond. He graduated from Manchester High School in 2000 and attended Virginia Commonwealth University. A singer/songwriter, he was a participant in and devotee of the local music scene. He attended Stony Point Reformed Presbyterian Church in Bon Air, Va. Nathan's passions were writing songs, playing music and spending time with his friends. He enjoyed a broad variety of both. As a solo acoustic artist he performed his own original songs and as a band member he played in several local bands, most notably, Escapists and Homemade Knives. His greatest pleasures were those occasions he was able to tour the eastern part of the country playing music with a band or performing his own songs solo. Those fortunate enough to know Nathan knew him as a loyal friend and devoted musician. He will be sincerely missed by his loving family and numerous friends.

A memorial service will be held at Stony Point Reformed Presbyterian Church at 2330 Buford Road, Richmond, Va., on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The American Cancer Society or Save the Music.
