About Nakasendo, Tsumago, Magome & the Kiso Valley 中山道 木曾

木曽路、 中山道, or 木曾街道.
The Nakasendo or Kisokaido or Kisoji was an ancient highway linking Kyoto with Edo (Tokyo) that began to take form around the 7th century. In the second half of the 17th century, The Tokugawa Shogunate, the central government at the time, made it one of the Gokaido or five major trunk roads that were under its direct control and that led to Edo. The most famous section of this road led through the Kiso Valley, which had 11 of the 67 post towns along the route. Many preferred this route to the Tokaido (Eastern Sea Road) because there were fewer rivers to ford.
There are a lot of pictures on flickr labeled with "Nakasendo", "Kiso.", "Tsumago," or "Magome." This is a group to share what you've captured along the way.
