About Multi-Colored Poodles
This is the place for poodles who are more than just one solid color! For those with parti, phantom, brindle, and sable colored poodles of all sizes. See below for definitions of various multi-colored poodles. (Info taken from arpeggiopoodles.tripod.com/poodlecoatcolors.html )
Parti-colored - Short for "Partial" Colored. At least fifty percent white, with spots or patches of any other acceptable solid color. The head can be of a solid color but white muzzle, blaze, or white muzzle/blaze combination is also fine. Also known has piebald or harlequin / harlekin.
Abstract - (otherwise know as a mismark): Less than fifty percent white, with the remaining percent any other acceptable solid color. Many breeders mistakenly call these abstracts tuxedos. They are however NOT true tuxedos. The white patch or patches are not seen on the skin like they are with true partis.
True Tuxedo - A very heavily marked parti and where as they are usually less than 50% white they are still considered a parti and are produced by partis. Tuxedos will usually have a white bib that may or may not go all the way around the neck, they usually have an all white belly. The white will usually extend from the elbows down to the feet and from the hock to the rear foot. However you can have some variation in this with one or two legs not having any white at all.
Phantom - Phantom poodles are bi-colored, with the same markings as a Doberman. That is, they have a lighter color appearing on their "eyebrows," muzzle and throat, legs and feet and below their tail.
Brindle - A coat that exhibits a tiger-striped pattern resulting from layered black hair intermingled in areas of lighter color.
Sable - A coat represented by black or dark-tipped hairs on a background of any solid color, with no particular pattern/location designated for such hairs.
Multi-Patterned - A dog that clearly exhibits more than one of the acceptable color patterns, such as; a Parti with full or incomplete phantom markings (facial markings with or without presentation of the diamond under the tail), or a Phantom with additional abstract markings, A brindle with abstract markings, a parti with brindle spots, etc.
Brief History of the Multi-colored poodle:
Believe it or not, poodles have a history of being multi-colored from centuries back. In the last couple hundred years, they've been culled at birth in favor of the solid colored poodles for the show ring. In recent times, some dedicated breeders are working at getting these spectacular colors back to the show ring and gene pool.
