Colour palette and film choice

I have seen some amazing portraits done in a studio setting with very dark, rich, baroque like tones - skin looks realistic, not garish vibrant, but rich dark tones and backdrops. Is there a particular film and lighting set up more suited to this style? eg. c41 or E6 film, pushed or pulled?

Unless you're doing something really silly like trying to shoot portraits on Velvia, the way studio lighting is used will have a much bigger influence on the photo than the difference between colour film stocks.

Thanks mugs. No easy way to glory then! Provia 100 has a richness to it that I like and is cheaper than 50! What do you mean adobe? Is this post processing in ps?

Yeah, post processing, as in www.adobe.com/products/photoshopfamily.html .

Have you got a link to an example of the look you're after?

Sounds like Rembrandt-ish is the look described.
As previously noted controlling light and setting would be important.
