Unfortunately we are going to be hard pressed to find a backyard and hills hoist near the CBD that is accessible by public transport. But a BBQ/Picnic meet by the yarra with byo eskies and a game of cricket will do me.

The other day I was thinking about old school games we used to play at the Army and Watersiders Union Xmas parties.
Three Legged Race
Egg Catching
Wheel barrow race
Tug of war
That would be cool.

Just be sure no one wears a wedding dress in the gardens (especially Jock). Wedding dress + lots of cameras = security chucking you out, unless you pay hundreds of dollars for a permit.
Luckily it's cool to be anti commercial (Maurice excepted) and super arty otherwise you'd have to pay $1100:

I dont think free range chickens have it that much better than caged ones. If you think free range chickens roam around a grassy paddock chasing rainbows then you would be mistaken. In most cases free range just means they are in a crowded shed free to roam in each others filth.
If egg throwing is out then perhaps we could play "Pin the D3x on Maurice"

Alas I will be out of the country for this year's day of drunken jingoism. This both saddens and pleases me. Mostly the latter.
Also, what's wrong with being free to roam in each other's filth?

Certification from FRFA/FREPA or Australian Certified Organic (BFA) means the chooks get a little bit of grassy rainbow chasing. There's a good summary here:

There is a BBQ and heaps of open space by the river, near my place.
It is 800m from a tram stop (Tram No 8). The 605 bus also leaves from the city and goes right past there but I imagine it would be infrequent on a public holiday.

Theeeee best eggs ever: Bullfrog Gully - the tastiest you will ever eat, biodynamic, but way to expensive for egging anything other than your plate. You will never eat any other egg once you've tried these. I'd buy shares if they had them.

I checked out the island the other weekend and its pretty cool. There is a big oval and BBQ areas in the middle of the island. If we dont get one of the shelters there are plenty of shady spots and benches. I confirmed that the punt will be running on Australia Day.

I went there 5 or 6 years ago. Yes, there are toilets, but no rubbish bins:
home.vicnet.net.au/~herring/
Leave only footprints (but not on nature bits). Take all those heavy glass bottles back with you.
Here is the link to the ferry:
parkweb.vic.gov.au/explore/parks/herring-island
which runs on demand i.e. you signal it.
I hope people avoid shots of the sculptures- taking pics of other people's artworks is like Damo's over the shoulder shots (unless you can do it real arty with a Diana).

Herring Island is super-easy to get to once you know where & how...
MELWAYS: 2M C2
The mini pier to catch the ferry is on Alexandra Ave, South Yarra.
It's a stones throw from Kanteen Cafe (aka redeveloped rowing shed with nice eats).
If you're driving along the Ave from the city, you need to turn left when you reach the two ovals (Como Park & Como Park Nth) that flank either side of the road. This is actually a continuation of the Ave anyway - if you keep going straight it becomes Williams Rd and will take you past Como House to Toorak Rd where there are lots of old retirees with silky terriers and rinse jobs.
Closest public transport stops & only a 5 minute walk away:
The #78 or #79 tram that runs along Church and Chapel St.
Get off at the Yarra and head away from the city.
The #8 tram along Toorak Rd.
Get off at Toorak & WIlliams Rd (stop #34) and walk along Williams toward the River. For those navigationally challenged - that's a right turn on Will if you're coming from the burbs/East and left if you've come from the city/West.
More info at Parks Victoria and Vicnet
Easy peasey japaneasy!
