26 Apr 09 - Hi and welcome to the group, which I hope will host good quality images of the 3 mountain ranges in County Waterford in the south of Ireland; the Comeraghs, the Monavullaghs and the Knockmealdowns.
There are many interesting features, from waterfalls like the Mahon Falls and the Magic Road; to the wonderful corrie lake at Coumshinaun.
Flora, fauna, landscapes and memorial plaques; I'd love to see photos which capture the essence of these mountains, and please add location info!

About The Mountains of Co. Waterford

The mountains of County Waterford in the Déise- County Waterford- consist of the Comeraghs, the Monavullaghs and the Knockmealdowns. They lie on the mid to northern part of the county and border on Tipperary in places.

The lore of the mountains covers a mountain hideout, an hermitage and a haunting; namely Crotty the Robber, Lackendara and Petticoat Luce respectively.

Songs about the mountains that I know of are;
'A Chomaraigh Áoibinn Ó' ('The Sweet Comeraghs'), the old lyrics and music brought to life by West Waterford's Karan Casey from Ballyduff Upper);
West Waterfordman Labhrás Ó Cadhla's 'Amhráin ó Shliabh gCua' (Song from Sliabh gCua), and
The lament of 'Kitty Bawn O'Brien' by Allister MacGillvary (info from; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knockmealdown_Mountains).

There are many scenic drives to take you through the fantastic views, the Comeragh Drive, the Vee Drive and others which take you through the region, and including a route past Mellary where the Cistercian monks reside in the Mount Mellary monastery .

It is not only the geological physical features that are interesting but there are grottos,plaques and memorials dotted along the way too, so that even if you are not into hillwalking there is plenty to enjoy.

One of the lovely sights to see are the purple and green Comeraghs when the weather is good, driving along the N25 between Kilmacthomas and Leamybrien, on the southern side of the mountains.

Another favourite view is from up at the Pike outside of Dunganvan, with the Bay laid out before you in front of the mountains. The Harbour at Helvick Head is another great spot, the sunsets over the mountains are awesome.

The northern side has it's own character, and hopefully we shall see all aspects of this magical region in the submissions from you all!
