About Monocle (Lens)

Soft focus lens or soft filter could be useful when taking pictures in almost any genre. Probably the most simple and oldest breed of a soft focus lens is one-element ("monocle") lens. "Monocle" is a name widely used in Russian photo literature and among Russian photographers; we will use it in this article instead of longer "One-element Soft focus lens". Good monocle is a pure pictorial instrument: it creates very soft, luminous image, concealing fine details. Monocle preserves contour of the image though; true monocle has to be sharp and at the same time very low contrast lens. It is well-known that monocle's picture formed by spherical aberrations of its uncorrected positive meniscus lens. The role of aperture is less common; it is good to remember that one can control the aberration by changing aperture size and location. Chromatic aberrations are also typical for simple monocle; they responsible for softer contour sharpness. For black and white monocle photography the chromatic aberration can be controlled by using color (yellow) filter.
