Moleskine and Modo: What is the difference??

view profile

yvestuck says:

Hello,
I have a Moleskine Pocket Sketchbook that I bought in 3rd quarter 2008, and a Moleskine Pocket Ruled Notebook that I bought in May of this year. In the Ruled Notebook, it says "Moleskine" with the Moleskine email and web address. However, the Sketchbook says something about "Modo & Modo" with different contacts (email and web address). Why is this?? I know it is the same company but why Modo & Modo and not Moleskine?

Thx, yvestuck

Modo&Modo is the company; Moleskine is the product they sell.

Some notebooks are marked different; for example, some have a email address and web address printed and others don't. They're all moleskines.

It's a bit complicated.(The brief history: www.moleskine.com/about_us/company_information_1.php)

An Italian company, Modo a Modo, was the previous owner of the Moleskine brand. Moleskine is owned by a different company these days. The new investment group from France, SGCapital, made significant changes to everything including manufacturing sources, labeling, quality control, distribution. They have molie offices in Milan IT and NYC.
Some of the older Modo units are said to have superior paper and better sewing/binding. I have many from both eras and, examining them carefully side by side, I can definitely see and feel differences. They are insignificant to my enjoymet and use, though.
The Modo molies sometimes were packaged with clever stickers and faux postage stamps. It's a shame those doodads are not included with the new notebooks.
One can obtain vintage Modo molies from booksellers who deal in old and remaindered stocks but it's hard to know what you're buying. I bought 15-20 Modo units in various formats from Sort Floor Books but someone at their end had sliced open the packaging and deliberately removed the stickers and stamps from most of the notebooks.

Yes, I was surprised when the announcement of "Made in China" came about... went home and quickly counted the stash of notebooks (mostly ruled notebooks both large and pocket sized) and it worked up to 32 (because I couldn't go to a bookstore and come out without one, even if I didn't need it). Presently, I use the Made in China ones while I am saving my original ones for... well, I am not quite sure yet. I received a Visconti pen as a gift recently, and decided to only write on my originals molies with it. Sure, I am a snob... but aren't we all?
