Stream-of-Consciousness Experiment on Moleskine

view profile

jjtelecaster says:

I'm considering an experiment: filling a pocket moleskine (reporter square) in a limited time. I think a week at most; a weekend would be nice.

It would involve carrying the notebook and pen all the time and writing while I'm doing other things: I mean not driving or having a shower, but I could write while watching the news, studying, playing go, having a coffee...

I'll forget about the precious paper, nice binding... just treat the notebook so as to shoot as much stuff in my mind onto paper as I can. I'm curious about how it would look like at the end.

I know this sounds " AnthonyThrollopian" (or maybe StephenKingish", but I want to give it a try.

That is an interesting concept.
I like the idea of it. Though I don't know how I would go about it.

Make sure you post again and tell us how it worked out. I would love to see some of the results in here if you are happy to share it.

I sometimes wonder what it would look like too if I just kept scribbling while doing other things. I have a large desk note pad under my keyboard at work and it has more scribbles than it has actual information on it. I guess your idea would keep the same idea more compact.

Nice idea, I would love to join you on that sometime!
And I agree, make sure you post and tell us if you try the experiment!

So far, around 40 pages. This experiment is sort of kill-the-notebook, or a pee-contest against myself. Time will tell.

Last year I fulfilled one of my dreams: attending a lecture (and ask a question) to Quino, the Argetinian comic books author and illustrator. He said that when he was a child he was always amazed about how many things were hidden within a pencil. I think I'm feeling the same with my pens and notebooks right now.

That is the most exciting thing one can do on his/her moleskine. Sounds like a marathon. But after I've filled up an entire diary or a journal, I hardly read it back

Very neat idea...have you done 40 pages in just one day already???

that is quite a dedication and discipline. go for it. whatever you finish is an accomplishment.

it sort of reminds me of a book i just picked up "The Artist's Way. A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity" by Julia Cameron and Mark Bryan

anyone familiar with this book? any comments about it, particullarly the writing of the Morning Pages?

keep us posted...

Now I like that idea. I once tried something similar with a disposable camera and fired off all the shots in one day but it didn't really work. I have a few unused Moleskins knocking about the place, maybe I should give this a go.

I'm familiar with "The Artists Way" though I have never had much luck with morning pages. My life is simply too hectic and I find myself thinking too much about the upcoming day and rushing off. I've had better luck with "lunchtime pages."

I'm thinking about a variation on this. I've always been a fan of clustering (see Gabrielle Rico's book, "Writing the Natural Way" - if you don't know what clustering is ) and am thinking about taking a large sketchbook and clustering it full. Maybe, as quickly as possible, fill each left hand page with a cluster and then write it out into text (Poem, essay, or simply some chunk of text) on the right.

I'm on-again, off-again with Morning Pages (which I write in a different notebook than the one I carry everywhere with me). I often write stream of consciousness in my everywhere notebook. Much of the time I'm just talking to myself on paper.

Rico describes clustering on her website here.

Nice one - I'm thoroughly inspired by this idea. So much so, I've begun my own stream-of-consciousness moleskine today! I've got a lot on my mind at the moment, so I'm hoping this will be a therapeutic exercise to help me sort out what's going on in the dark recesses of my mind...

Currently filled twenty pages since this morning...

This sort of "hot penning" is much like Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg. I've been trying this for a while, with cheaper notebooks, but cannot seem to fulfill the notebook per month. I manage about one notebook every three months. Good luck.

Right now I have around 40 pages left. I've included studying notes, ramblings, attempts of shodo writing...whatever was in my mind.

This sounds like a challenge to me!

Okay, you win, I’ll join in. Really, this is a great idea. I keep my notebook with me wherever I go but sometimes I don’t make time to write in it. I need rules, structure even.

I will start today with a new squared notebook.

1 week. 04.03.08 – 04.10.08.

I bet you could get a whole crew going on this. I'm not in the right mood right now, but might have a go later...I like the morning pages when I do them, it does seem to calm my nerves. I actually had a DREAM that I was at Julia Cameron's apartment for some type of a workshop and was shocked that she was some frumpy ineffectual person with poor housekeeping skills and not so wealthy as I had imagined. WIERD, you know? Loud and clear: This has no reflection on Julia Cameron. I do not know her. I have bizarre projections onto this woman. I've been told it's probably because I look like her a little. But her apartment in this dream was such a mess!

I am totally jazzed by this idea, and not in the least by the fact that it allows me to indulge my addiction to purchasing moleskine books. Started today in a brand-spanking-new soon to be trashed tome. Cheers!

I have 25 pages left yet. I should have tried it in a plain one. I chose a grid reporter, and I follow the lines, so that means more lines per page. It will take a couple more days than I expected.

I tried this in a cahier and ran out of ink in two pens in about half an hour in. I'll try again when I get home and get more ink.

I'm telling you right now: I'm doing the same thing in a pocket cahier, and it's absolutely amazing. It lets you open up so much. I carry it around in my back pocket, so it's with me all the time. SO AWESOME.

Done. I finally killed the notebook (I did it 2 days ago). It took me a couple of days more than I expected. I'll check the entries in a few weeks.

The notebook looks weird for a filled one; there are some scratches and dirt, but not what you get after a few months of use. I decorated the cover with the kanji for "samurai" since it has had a short yet beautiful life.

I may try this again; it's been somewhat therapautical, and I think I've overcome the 1st page terror.

wow. what a brilliant idea. i might try that something, although not right now as i have a concussion and can't focus on anything for more than about 3 minutes :-) i'm pretty regular with my morning pages, which i do find very helpful. mostly the only times i don't do them are when i'm on holiday or when i'm working a contract that requires me to get up stupidly early anyway (although if the commute is long enough i'll sometimes do them on the tube). i do them in the largest lined cahiers (buff cover) and generally go through one cahier every 6 weeks to 2 months.

This sounds a great idea. I'm always on the lookout for ways to circumvent (right word ?) the rational mind. . . .without resorting to drugs ;

Seriously, this sounds very interesting and I'm going to get a few days to myself next week so that might be a good time to try. If it goes well, I might get the courage to post a few pics up here.

A lot of my poetry gets its energy from dreams, fairy tales, shamanic journeys, etc. and I find myself (in writing, at least) constantly fighting the prosaic. It has to make sense, yes, ultimately, otherwise it is indeed very much akin to an acid trip. I don't want to read about other people's incomprehensible experiences and I don't suppose they 're that jazzed to hear mine, either. :)

This really does sound like a great idea, I think I may do it myself with my current moleskine starting tomorrow morning. Sorry to steal the idea, I will think at some point about where I got the idea from thus write it down and give credit to you

This is brilliant, Juan. As a thread I started just recently can testify, this would be wonderful for me - it would force me to fill it, and that's what I need.

I'm going to join you on this one, Juan. I have an unused checked pocket all wrapped up nice and tight in it's cello, and it's this I'll be using!!
