I just bought my first mole book, for the purpose of keeping a dream diary. My current favorite pen is a Pilot G-2; but when I went to write in the book, I found it smudging. Part of the problem is that I write right-handed, but like a left hander; with a "crook". So my hand rests on what I just wrote. So I need a nice, sharp, quick drying pen.

I guess for the purposes of this thread, you don't have to mention a pen that fits my bill. But I am looking...

Apart from that, Staedtler Triplus Fineliners in all colours (dark grey and brown are particularly lovely).

No, I have not found a good waterproof ink for fountain pens. (You can use waterproof ink in most fountain pens - but then you MUST flush it with water every time after writing.) For waterproof writing and drawing I use COPIC Multiliners

I like to write three lines per one line of the notebook with 0.25mm Pilot Hi-Tec-C pens, and two lines per line with 0.5mm Pentel Hybrid Gel Grip pens for important notes (appointments, deadlines, etc.).  The latter requires one to put something in between the pages if you don’t want any ink to get on the opposing page, though.  I use (and reuse and reuse) notecards.  (Clearly, I am a student.)

I have always been a 'perfect pen' addict, and my perfect pen (happily very moleskine-friendly) is the Sanford Uni-ball Micro 0.2mm black roller ball pen. My fiancee jokes that I can't even jot down a phone number without one of these. It's not quite that bad, but I can't do serious creative work with anything else, especially anything thicker; it feels like I'm writing with a 2x4 otherwise.

mshea, that was really hilarious. i liked the inclusion of the penn state ballpoint. i've been toying with the idea of doing my own test, based on some of the pen choices people have mentioned.

i probably won't be including the pilot vanishing point, but i should be able to gather up some of the others.

and since my moleskine rarely comes in contact with hairspray, i'll probably just give it the old smudge test.

I use a pair of the schoolboy typical classic Parker Frontier Fountain Pens as can be seen here. With them usually coming with a medium nib which is the standard fountain nib, they do blot through or leave marks from time to time, I guess the traditional and natural look it gives the the Moleskine book does have some kind of appeal.

I've been a pen collector for about 40 years and Moleskine user for about 5 years. In the years I have been Skinning, I have found that it is not so much a matter of what pen you are using as much as it is about the INK.

I have a range of pens from the the Pilot Varisity, G-2's, Sensa, Fisher Space, Parker 51's, Duofold's, Vintage pens through to some limited editions. I find that I am most happy with two Sailor pens. One with an EF nib and the other their Togi nib. I love them both, but it is Noodler's Bulletproof Black that really makes the difference. I had been using Sheaffer's black and Noodler's Squeteague, Beaver, and La Couleur Royale. All of them have to much water in them and bleed through the standard Moleskine paper. They work great on the sketchbook pages, but they are not very waterproof. Sharpie's are great permenant ink pens, but not for the paper. Here again I would only use for sketchbook paper.

For a ballpoint pen, I am deeply in love with the Sensa line and the Fisher Space pen refills. I enjoy a bold black or blue nib. The colors in the Fisher line are really very nice, but I have found that with time they have a tendancy to bleed on the moleskine standard paper. Especially the red ink.

When it comes to using color in my Moleskine's I have leaned more heavily on colored pencil leads. My favorite being the Bic leads and second would be the "ish" leads that are getting harder and harder to find, but comes in a great range of color beyond the basic blue, red, green, pink. I also use W&N watercolour's which if not to wet works great on the standard paper. Doesn't take to kindly to the sketchbook paper though.

The whole issue comes down to personal tastes and personal preferences. Give them all a try and have fun doing it.

I've also used the triplus fineliners, and their excellent watercolor brush pens (mars graphic 3000 duo), but the pigment liners, they are my favorite... in fact the only *non* staedtler writing instrument I have is a koh-i-noor mechanical pencil, .7mm... @chad: don't use the Higgins in your Sheaffer. It might flow initially but will clog and it is a pain to clear. If you do need to clear a fountain pen like that. Use 1 part hot water to 1 part ammonia or ammonia based glass cleaner like Windex. Let it soak for an hour with several shakes in between and it should unclog.

If you want some cool colors, check out Winsor Newton calligraphy inks that are suitable for fountain pens. Hope this helps!

I had a matte black Fischer bullet with a clip and lost it, and was too bitter to buy another one. Inspired by this comment thread, I drove over to the local art supply store. I told the lady at the counter, "I'm not an artist, I'm a nerd and I need a pen."

Then I tested pretty much every pen that looked remotely promising. I ended up with the following: a Sakura 0.5 Gelato Gelly Roll, a Faber-Castell S PITT artist pen, and a Kuratake 0.05 Millennium ZIG (ZG?). All in black.

The Kuratake is my favorite so far, as long the nib doesn't snap. I fear the snapping. Second favorite is the Sakura. Anyone want to buy the Faber-Castell? :)

Some thoughts on my Sheaffer Javelin:

The Sheaffer Skrip ink is really the only thing I can put in this pen. I've tried multiple "fountain pen safe" inks in a Sheaffer Calligraphy and they pretty much ruined the pen. However, I'm very pleased with the Skrip ink. It makes traveling with ink much easier and also writes smoothly and quickly everytime.

The nib is a tad scratchy, but I can live with it. For my first good fountain pen investment, I can live with slight scratchiness. I'm usually leave it unposted and I'm quite pleased with it's weight.

I'm considering getting a Hero 329, but I'll have to hear some good things about the inks and the nib first. At a glance, I'm assuming the nib is pretty scratchy.

I've been using Pilot Better Retractable Fine Point pens for about 8 years. They do smudge a little bit, but there is something about them that is very forgiving to handwriting - it makes everyone's look pretty.

Thanks, hundrednorth!

Actually, it depends on the paper, too. I just received my Hero 329 and it writes smoothly on some papers and shows some resistance on other papers. Unfortunately, on the Moleskine, I've noticed the ink dries to have spidery lines around the writing. At first, I thought there was some fine hair caught in the nib but it isn't - I don't get this "effect" on other types of paper.

I think the ink might have some effect on the pen, too. I'm using Pelikan Royal Blue on the Hero 329.

So far, what works best on my Moleskine is Staedtler triplus gel-liner. I got the set of 6 colours, which works for me, because I do use the purple along with the blue and the black. I sometimes use the green and the red, too. It's the pink that's used the least.

I used to use a Parker fountain pen, but the ink kept leaking. Now I use a Parker Jotter and a Reflex (when I can find it) with the Parker Gel inks.

Here's a quick sketch I did to show you how the Sheaffer Javelin (with the blue Skrip ink) looks on Moleskine paper (plain)

Edit: I couldn't figure out how to post it like the above people, so I just added it to the group.

I almost forgot one of my *other* favorite pens... it follows in the same thread as my others though. a Staedtler Mars professional. drafting pen. it has a screw on cap, and interchangeable inks and tips, so you can keep the same body, but have different line widths. It's like interchangeable lenses on an camera I suppose :) Writes just about the same as a pigment liner, but it looks fancier... :)

my favorite pens are rapidiographs.... they don't dry super fast though. I also have been using a dip pin or quill a lot lately. those don't dry quick either, but I am left handed and have just taught myself to write/ draw with out resting my hand on the page. superior control in my opinion, similar to japanese (sic) brush caligraphy.

I've discovered the Stabilo Color Gel 208 pens. I like a medium tip, but for some reason I never warmed up to the G2 0.7 mm pens. This pen is longer, has a rubberized grip near the tip, and has a pretty good heft in the hand. I love it.
