Minnesota Strobist Meetup #21 - 19 July, 2009 Fort Snelling State Park

view profile

Ben Zvan  Pro User  says:

It looks like everybody had a ball at the June meetup, so I guess it's time to start up the July discussion. I'm starting to think that an indoor location with air conditioning would be nice.

Requirements for attendance:
- You must have photos available to view on flickr.com.
- You must be interested in learning about off-camera flash.
- You must have a post in this thread indicating your attendance.
- You must be willing to provide photographs to every model you shoot.

Procedures:
- There will be a sign-in sheet for models and photographers at the metup location, when you arrive, please sign in and put on a name tag. You are welcome to bring your own name tag.
- When you arrive, locate me and give me your dues for the meetup. I look like this. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

Photographic Courtesy
There is no problem taking set up shots and candid shots of the photographers and models while they work. Please do not jump into a lighting set up to take photos without asking first. Refer to this thread for more information.

Location: Fort Snelling State Park (Under the Mendota Bridge.)
Theme: Outdoor sports and small lights (speedlights only)
Date: 19 July, 2009

TJ Asher says:

I'd like to get back to our roots a bit more.

The last few outings we have had a lot of heavy artillery. I think it would be nice and a benefit to the newer members attending to get back to our Strobist roots and limit the lights to just the speedlights.

I think we were much more creative in how we had to approach a shot when our supply of light was a bit limited. With a big ol' strobe you have more options but are not as thoughtful when setting up lights and finding a solution.

I think the big studio setups can be good and educational and are certainly lots of fun but they are not really in the Strobist philosophy of Less Gear - More Brain - Better Light.

Last meetup our group had 6 or 8 bags of crap! :) Not that I minded and I certainly have AT LEAST that much crap myself, but that's definitely not the Strobist style.

Just the way I am thinking about these right now.

@TJ - This was just my second meetup with this group. I'm still new to the group, but not to strobist in general. I have both strobes and flash. Each has their place. I don't entirely agree with your position regarding creativity.

Maybe it's just me, but I follow the same general creative process, thinking, light alignment, etc. with either set of lights. Maybe it's just out of habit, but I still use my Sekonic for either set up, too, but I still chimp with both.

I do not believe strobist is or ever was intended to be restricted just to flashes. In fact, David H recently blogged about this very fact. That said, since I'm new to this group, perhaps I've missed the point, about this or at least about the formation of this group.

Personally, I'm with Rick about this. I'd like it to be open to whichever style fits the individual photographer's need and/or the intent of the particular meetup. That's my two cents worth. I hope I haven't offended anyone in the process!

Chris (Tyrone) says:

TJ...I only own small strobes. I am not in favor of limiting the light, but I plan to be as much a small light person as possible for the forseeable future. Sunday, I did not rummage around stalking the big light. I purposely found an environment no one else seemed to want, and used only small lights. I purposely limited my resources to acquire a different set of challenges. I figure my pictures won't be as glamorous as the big game hunters, but I will learn a lot. I really like that you are thinking this way, though. My 2 cents.

OK - time to start throwing out ideas for locations. With the current heat, I like Ben's suggestion of air conditioning. If we shoot outside, I would like to see if we could find a park or location with water (river or lake) - maybe a waterfall and/or a beach.

daveswartz66 says:

Although I appreciate the concepts of smaller strobes, lighter gear, etc...and the challenges that present themselves when using such, please entertain my thoughts on the subject. As I understand it, the concept of "strobist" is to use available light in conjuction with "created" light for the "image". In essence, is not the "final" image what it is all about? At times, smaller strobe usage requires many including an abundance of stands, triggers/receivers to where a couple bigger, more powerful lighting equipement will not only afford for better exposure issues but in the end, a more pleasing final image. Many times we mix and match both types of lighting for a desired look. If one wishes to shoot say at f/10 @ ISO 100 and knock the ambient out of the picture (sorry for the pun) then just how many flash guns with miniature modifiers are needed? If shooting outdoors to overcome bright sunlight, again, the amount of equipment (not to mention the cost of such) presents new challenges and at times will NOT provide the necessary lighting as that of larger light sources.

Yes, I'm in agreement for the strobist concepts but in the end, the final image is paramount. We implement so many ideas and set ups throughtout each outing that makes these meetups invaluable for experimenting, learning, sharing and growth to the profession. I wouldn't trade it for the world......but limiting ourselves may present substandard imagery, which should never be the end result.

Just my two cents.

I'm more of a monolights indoors lighting guy up to this point, but working through the challenge of location lighting is fun and seems to lend itself to hotshoe flashes a lot of the time. But I don't know if I'd want to restrict what tools people use.

An open area like a beach where people have plenty of room to spread out and pick their spots might be cool to try. It would be nice to have some models on hand in case the idea of approaching people doesn't work. (Good idea, though.)

We can also choose a beach location somewhere in the suburbs which maybe less busier, so maybe prior lake or eagan (lebanon hills park) or if we want models maybe we can try the hidden beach (cedar lake) near uptown.

PDUB's says:

I'd like to chime in along TJ's lines and suggest a "run and gun" shoot. Strobist is about portability and small lights. We've had a few with the monoblocs, lets go for a meetup as portable as possible, and have it as a mobile venue in Saint Anthony or Lowertown Saint Paul....somewhere with varying scenery and lighting that requires us adapting our setup (ie. gelling, varying heights, etc...)

P.S. I'm in

I like PDUB's' idea of something where we have a lot of freedom of movement and the smaller lights would be more useful. I also like the idea of having some meetups be small-light-centric and some large-light-centric.

The Cedar Avenue bridge worked well last spring, but there's no power or facilities. That hasn't stopped us before, but it's something to keep in mind when setting up for makeup, etc.

What about ft. snelling park under the mendota bridge.
Beach, trees, walking paths, picnic areas, walking bridges, bike paths, overhead bridge, River, Lake, power outlets for makeup.

I like it but would have to contact park office about group area and possible rental fee.

Also, we can have another shoot at Belzer's in the future.

Ben Zvan  Pro User  says:

Here's a thought: How about an 'outdoor' themed shoot? We could hit Fort Snelling under the bridge and do vignettes of walking, running, hiking, backpacking, etc. We'd want a good mix of male and female models and they would only need a minimum of hair and makeup, so they could do it themselves. That way we wouldn't have to worry about when the models were ready or if we had access to electricity.

TJ Asher says:

Remember that the Cedar Ave Bridge is sitting on Ft. Snelling State Park land and if you are parked in the lot there, you need a state park sticker.

What's happening up at the Fort itself at that time? How about that area or along the river in one of the St. Paul city parks in that vicinity?

Just tossing out some more fodder for discussion.

The Fort Snelling Museum is only open Saturdays or M-F by appointment. I'm not sure we can get them to open their doors for us on a Sunday.

Rick. I think we can make sure there's at least one other state park event, but honestly, shouldn't we all have state park stickers on our cars already? We are photographers after all.

As for the light / heavy gear... my vote is that people bring what they want. To me, this group is about learning lighting, not necessarily imposing limitations on yourself (I shoot with big lights at home and prefer to learn on the gear I shoot on - especially when we shoot in sunlight where small strobes really limit your options). It seems that those who want to shoot only small lights can easily join together at any given shoot and ignore what others are doing. Having said that, I'm happy to go with the group if there are strong feelings that use of bigger equipment is an issue.

Ben - small light or "no restrictions"?

I'd vote "small light" on this meetup for the reasons I'd previously stated above. I'm more interested in "run-and-gun" Strobist style since I'm primarily on the move from location to location fairly rapidly during my own shoots.

We can have the August meetup where everyone can bring their monoblocs.
