How about "Vertical Endeavors" it's an indoor rock climbing place in St. Paul.
It may be too cool yet in April but the State Fair Grounds might be a place we could go sometime. Interesting buildings and such.
Here is another thought - the railroad museum on Jackson Street in St. Paul. It's an old roundhouse and has lots of cool old trains and old coach style busses out in the yard. I've never been in there, but drive past regularly.
Whatever it is, I'm there.

I was thinking about giving precidence to the people who were on the waitlist for last month, but "last month" in this case hasn't happened yet. So we don't really know who will have not made the final list. For now, I'm sticking to the old methods.
Vertical Endeavors would rock! Pun intended. Can we find some climbers? Do they have enough space for all of us or should we make that one a smaller meetup?
I've been stopped while taking pictures on the State Fair grounds in the off season before. I don't recall if they asked us to leave or what. It may have just been my parking job that bugged them.

Another possibility for where to shoot might be an ice rink, though we would have to be really early or really late on a weekend at this time of year.
When I coached there Northeast Ice Arena (formerly Edison Civic Arena) used to have extra ice fairly regularly at a reasonable price. Though they are under new management now so I don't know if that's still the case.

Bill: Any progress on VE? I know at least one group of climbers, but I'm not sure what their schedule is.
Jason Stahl: Skateville is an ice rink, so that gives us two possibilities. Are you interested in checking options for prices? I know GreyDuck knows some skaters, so we could do some great action shots.

The last that I knew, Skateville was a roller rink. I don't think that they'd appreciate it if we tried using ice skates on their skating surface.

@Ben: apparently, that's not a difficult task... :)
However, I do have experience shooting there. Wide open floor (great wood!) and the option of using all of the lights. There are also video and boardwalk game shot possibilities, too. They do rent skates, but I'm not sure what the cost would be to "borrow" the space for any good deal of time. Last I remember, it was close to $400 during the summer on an "off" day.

Northeast Ice Area is pulling their ice up next Sunday, so that's a non-starter. That's way earlier in the year then they used to pull the ice.

the train station thing Bill mentioned above sounds great to me! MAchinery and models...what more could I ask for, except perhaps beer and pizza. If we want climbers I know several that could maybe give us ideas and be climber models. I sense the current chatter leads toward ice, though. Are we still open to most ideas or is it officially narrowed to ice?

Just checked in with Skateville and they charge $400 for a two-hour time slot. They are also booked solid from noon to 7:00p that day so its looking like S-ville is a no-go...

Ben- My bowling alley idea... well there is Bryant Lake Bowl. Each small group takes a full lane and goes for it. Plus there is window light in front.
Or in West St Paul near Cretin, I can't remember the name... it's like a VFW feel, towny bowling alley. Character, old-school bowling lockers and bad carpet. Interesting features.

tyronejones: The reason I limited the list to 25 is to keep the model/photographer ratio fairly high. This is partly by way of experiment and may change after the March meetup. I feel the need to find the right ratio and make sure we can reliably scale up the size of our meetups. For example, the Minneapolis Photo Center meetup had a borderline low ratio.

We haven't decided yet. We're also looking into the Jackson Street roundhouse in St. Paul and a bowling alley. Bryant Lake bowl is out because they want $10,000 to close down for the day.

The Jackson Street roundhouse is available for rental on Sundays but not on Sunday the 19th as it is already booked. The 26th would work for them.

It will cost us up to $8 per person. We can afford that out of the Strobist budget without charging extra. I'm not sure about the yard. It would be up to the people who are letting us in when they're closed.

Oddly, I'd actually like to do some shooting outside in the cold and rainy. Might need to bring a thermos of hot cocoa for the models though.
