Day 2 exercise: submit a photo and discuss how you tagged it.

The exercise is to select three photos from this pool (using at least one photo that you submitted to this Flickr group) and add at least two tags to each photo. Your goal is to add tags that would help others find the photos and learn about the photos. (You can try out multi-word tags). Once you have done with tagging, write a post in this thread to link to the photos that you have tagged, indicating what tags you used to tag the photos. Reflect on why you selected those tags and any problems that you ran into while selecting these tags.

added tags: fashion, sunglasses

I added these tags because pretty much any picture with Lady Gaga can be tagged with fashion and she is wearing sunglasses.

www.flickr.com/photos/46907686@N03/4308336562/in/pool-mix...
added tags: cup, "collectors item"

I added these tags because these were the first things that popped into my mind when I looked at this and neither of them were in the current tags.

my photo:

I started this photo with tags: "matching outfit", iphone

my friend and I arrived at a party both wearing matching outfits without having planned it so it's the first thing I think of when I see this picture, additionally it was taken with my iPhone.

I can't say that I had any trouble tagging any of these pictures.

The three photos that I tagged were:
1. San Antonio Riverwalk2 (my photo). I added the tags: San Antonio, Riverwalk, Dec2008, Texas, and cityscape.
2. Van at Shattuck. I added the tags: "art van" and blue.
3. Somes Sound at Dusk. I added the tags: "Somes Sound" and dusk.

With my photo, I first tried to add the tag San Antonio (without double quotes), but, as Flickr does, it converted my entry to two separate tags "San" and "Antonio" which is not what I wanted. I had to get used to using double quotes for multi-word tags. I suppose I could just meld them together myself, but it seemed less natural. The only tag that I added that wouldn't help others find the photo would be the "Dec2008" tag, which I added just for myself, I suppose.

Most of the tags I already thought of for the Van at Shattuck had been added (art car, for example), so I added the synonym "art van" instead. It probably won't help people find the photo unless a critical mass of "art van" photos are added to Flickr. I also added the tag "blue" because one fun feature of Flickr is being able to filter by predominant photo colors, probably for other art projects.

The photo Somes Sound at Dusk did not have many tags, so I added the obvious ones "Somes Sound" and "dusk" to help other people who were familiar with that sound in finding photos of it. I think "dusk" is just another interesting facet (time of day) to add to photos.

Lady Gaga
added tags: artist, Monster

I added these tags because she is an artist and Monster is involved in the context of this photo.

Party with same outfit
added tags: party, "shirt and tie"

I added these tags because this is a photo taken at a party, and both people were wearing shirt and tie.

my photo:
Gold Crystal

I started this photo with tags: gold, crystal

I found this picture in Wikimedia Commons. It is the picture of the day.

I uploaded the photos of the bike and the coffee cup with the monster face (the character Domokun).

The tags I added were to the bike photo ("road bike" and "for sale", because there are many usable kinds of bikes but this is not a mountain, track, touring, etc., bike, and because I could put it into the category of things I'd like to sell that are best represented in photos).

Also tagged the coffee cup ("Domokun" because that's the distinctive character face and "7-11" is where, surprisingly, you can get it -- I had to beg the nice lady there to let me have just a cup, w/o paying for coffee, which I didn't want). The first tag would help people looking for Domokun kitsch. If people were looking for some weird promotional stuff related to 7-11, that tag would help return this image.

I added the tags "riverfront" and "urban park" to the San Antonio photograph, because I thought those would be two terms that people would use when looking for certain cityscapes/city features.

My photo: www.flickr.com/photos/xree/731512986/in
tags: glacier, wildflowers, "British Columbia", Revelstoke
The first two tags refer to visible content and the last two describe location

www.flickr.com/photos/46992927@N07/4309269147
tag: "CES 2010"
Although CES and 2010 were already added as tags, I thought a single composite tag would be useful for people searching for photos from this year's show.

The three photos I tagged are as follows:

www.flickr.com/photos/kimretta/3722660646/in/pool-mixinga...
I added the tags "Yachts" and "marina" on the basis of the image content. I chose "Yachts" over "Yacht" since there were multiple Yachts in the image, and as mentioned in the book, the Flickr clustering algorithm treats "Yacht" and "Yachts" as one.

www.flickr.com/photos/46976540@N06/4308670934/in/pool-mix... [My photo]
I tagged this pic using the tags "van", "berkeley" and "hippie". I used "van" due to the van's presence, "berkeley" was the location, and "hippie" due to the color theme on the van.

www.flickr.com/photos/xree/731512986/in/pool-mixingandrem...
I tagged this pic with the tags "nature" and "Canada". I used "nature" as it describes the overall theme of the image, and "Canada" since that was the location where the image was taken.

I based my tagging practices primarily on image content, and did not run into any major issues while tagging.

My photo was the Somes Sound one. I started it off with the two tags that were already on it — Maine and June2009 — and left the rest to everyone else.

As for what I tagged:

www.flickr.com/photos/xree/731512986
I added "mountains" and "clouds" — mostly because I thought those were the two most striking elements in the photo that had not been explicitly tagged yet.

www.flickr.com/photos/adechen/4310138272/
I added "monument" — to have a tag that reflected the title — and "quadricycle." That one was actually tough to figure out. I'd heard those four-person bikes called "surreys," but there was only one photo tagged "surrey" on Flickr, so I figured there must be a better word. I tried googling various things, including "four-person bicycle," and in the end, "quadricycle" seemed to be the most popular term.

www.flickr.com/photos/46980941@N05/4309412131/
I added "glow" and "group." In both cases I checked to see what other photos were tagged with those words on Flickr already, in order to see if this photo would fit in well with them. I thought about adding the two-word tag "san francisco," but upon further exploration, I realized "sf" and "san francisco" get grouped together in Flickr's clustering system already.

I added this photo of Lady Gaga and tagged it with: "lady_gaga," "CES," "2010," "las_vegas," and "hats" -- because it's a photo of Lady Gaga at the 2010 CES in Las Vegas, and that's a really big hat. I don't use flickr much and don't know if there are conventions for two word tags, but decided to go with the underscore to separate "lady gaga" and "las vegas."

I tagged the cup with "coffee" and "book," imagining people looking for images for their blog posts about reading and drinking coffee.

And I tagged the kids at the Exploratorium with "children" (since flickr doesn't seem to group "kid(s)" and "child(ren)" together AFAICT) and with "wonder." This image would likely be just what I was looking for if I did a search on "children" or "kids" and "wonder."

I added the Seoul Olympic Monument and tagged it accordingly with "Seoul", "Korea" (not Korean), "Olympic" (not Olympics).

For Somes Sound at Dusk I added "sunset" and "bay".

For 0968 I added "spring" and "landscape" just to make it easier for users doing a general search for pretty pics.

1. I tagged the bike for sale picture with tags: bike, bikes, bike for sale.
I reckoned that there is probably no distinction between "bike" and "bikes" for people who want to see a picture of a bike.

There was a tag for "for sale". I though "bike for sale" was more focused and also a common tag.

2. I tagged party friends with friends and laugh. I also thought they would be interesting tags to look images for.

3. I tagged the kids at exploratorium with kids, children, sf and exploratorium indicating the place of the photo taken and the subject.
