BLOCK (3:02:17 cst; 9/26/07)
|
Greetings Agents:
A call from Headquarters! We've always told you to be on your toes. You never know when you'll be called in for service. Today's the day -- a new day, a new time, a new deadline. Don't let us down.
Headquarters needs your help for another special op with our partner, the rogue agency M24: Diesel to ensure this week's theme is covered with creativity and class.
Here's how this works:
1) Like we do every week, compose, shoot, and post a photo that embodies this week's theme: BLOCK
2) Tag all submitted photos with BLOCK and Mission24 (one word).
3) After you've posted photos to Mission24 (including into this BLOCK discussion thread), head over to M24: Diesel and post them there as well. You may need to join the Diesel group before you can post to its pool. This week we're covering the same topic, but Diesel will soon begin producing its own themes, independent of the original group. Be sure to sign up for the Diesel e-mail list today to receive future assignments from that organization.
For Mission 24, the deadline for BLOCK is Wednesday, 9/26/07, 15:02:17 (3:02:17 Central Time).
The deadline for Diesel is different. See their group page for rules and regulations.
Please note that your photos for M24 and Diesel do not need to be the same. You can post different pictures to each group as long as they all relate to BLOCK.
Happy shooting and remember to post your BLOCK photos to this thread and tell us more about them
-- Mr. X

I was contemplating my first Mission 24 submission for the theme: "block" and then I realized that just this weekend I had found a slightly unusual use of blocks. These towers in Millennium Park in Chicago are made of custom glass blocks with LEDs behind each one to produce the face images. About a week ago my school had a lecture from the architect who assisted on this project and he explained all the technicalities and challenges of construction. Mixing glass blocks with electronics and a water feature required the architects to invent a new structure and method of hanging the facade. Every so often, the blocks spit out a stream of water onto anyone passing by.

One of my BLOCK submissions was my concrete block wall.
There are a few blocks left on the other side of the driveway.

I tried to move one of those to create a new "block" photo and stepped into a fireant bed.
And when I decided to shoot the ant bed, my cat decided to pose on the block.

Agent Mtnwa -
Thanks so much for posting this to the thread. What an interesting photo and an amazing structure! We're glad to have you in the agency and look forward to exemplary work from you.

Mandy - That's funny. One thing led to another. One shot led to another. Your photos became building blocks themselves -- creating a whole photo story! Thanks for sharing it in the discussion thread. - Mr. X

At first, I was going to take the quick, easy route.

But then, I was "forced" into being more creative!:)

Other shots along the way....

Hmm, for some reason, my pics aren't showing in the pool. I am sleep deprived so it could a silly mistake on my end. Anywho, these are my submissions....

Moca, your moderators were at lunch. They're in the pool now.
Great pics, everyone! I wasn't sure if block would produce so many different interpretations, but now I know.
Keep them coming-

Here's mine. I didn't get the mission til I got to work today, so I had to scramble. It's been fun, as always!

I should really be ashamed of the toilet humor, but I ain't!!!

There's a place on Ole Miss campus where they store the great ranks of public toilets used for gameday revelers. Click the pic for more info on how I think this relates to the theme.

So ends our surprise mission BLOCK. Please continue to post your photos and explanations in the thread below; we always want to hear more!
This mission really brought out the blockheads. We saw a stumbling block, a mystery block, and even helped bring a family together.
We revisited that most revered of cheap building materials, the cinder block. Some loose and some in use. Some blocks took us back to our homespun roots, while others showed us a slice of life as a M24 Spook.
Some were tasty-looking but not edible. Some just made us want to travel.
There's plenty more to see, so take a look around the M24 pool and find BLOCK-specific posts using keywords Mission24 and Block.
'Til next time-

Wow, this M24 almost beat me. I didn't check my email (or get the objective) until today at 9:40 AM, 20 minutes before a scheduled Oil change that would lead directly into another appointment until 12:30, with the deadline (adjusted to my time) was at 1!
During the oil change I knew I was a 5 minute walk to an area of construction and since road-block was one of the first things that came to mind (the other first things will be saved for Diesel). Being done so quickly, I wasn't able to play around with the settings on my new camera enough to get the desired effect. I would have loved to have a shallower depth-of-field and seen more background blur. Oh well, I am still quite happy for this rushed shot.
I know that Diesel participants have a few more days to produce shots, and I have at least two planned shots for diesel. After that though, I'd love to see some discussion about other thoughts you had on the mission keyword. In other words, if you didn't shoot what you did, or if you had the time/location/resources to do something else, what would you have done? Lets talk about that on Friday!
