GEAR (Noon, CST; 09/13/07)
|
To all available Agents:
Headquarters has spoken. Your next assignment is GEAR.
Dust off your camera gear and get to work. Please post your pics and tell us a bit more about them in this discussion thread.
Deadline for this mission is NOON, Central Time, Thursday, 09/13/07.
------
And don't forget: Next week will bring the official activation of our sister group, M24: Diesel.
In the meantime, head on over to their group page, sign up for their mission email list, and introduce yourself in the forums. Our missions will be the same for the first few weeks, but they will soon go dark and start to work independently from HQ. You will want to be on board for that.

Let's kick this off. I am seriously dorking it up with my gear pic. In my other life, I was a wedding videographer who managed to rack up an obscene amount of personal camera equipment. Here's some of it:

Here's the really dorky part: Click on the pic to go to its photo page and then mouseover for my semi-obsessive notes on what we have.
GEAR was a fortuitous theme for me b/c we're headed out to shoot more for our muscadine documentary tomorrow and had this stuff lying around.

I used the Solarize effect with Photo shop Elements here and it really worked with the things in my room:

I kept saying gear today to see what would first come to mind...well it wasn't my bike...it was my makeup. You know every woman's morning gear, but I thought the bike looked better

Ann, I thought of the make-up too!

Makeup, huh? Now there's an interpretation I never would've thought of!

I had a thousand ideas when it came to gears. I took pictures of rear differential gears (not interesting), landing gear (too far away, couldn't really see it), the gear selector in my car (also not very interesting), and I tried to get a picture of the huge gear at the top of the Hawthorne Bridge upright like egazelle, to no avail. So I had to settle for the baby's toy, acquired by granny from a resale shop:

And of course to balance out Monsieur lucian's fancy pants gear with the more low-cost variety (from the place where I have acquired my two rangefinders at very reasonable cost) :

Ok, so I'm a gearhead.
I considered popping this cover off to expose the ring and pinion on my jeep... but it's a messy job, and it's late, and I don't have any synthetic 75W140 laying around excuses, excuses

But at least you can see gear oil that's leaked out all over the differential.

In the same vein of thinking as un4gtableann and lucianvenutian, here's my gear I lug to work everyday:

I thought of a gear shaft on a car but didn't know what one looked like! LOL. So, my next thought was one like this. This one is great. :)
Oh landing gear is a good one! I have this one but didn't take it today: Landing gear on da plane, da plane.
All of these gear photos are great!

Do you know how many watches we took apart to find one that you can see the gears? A bunch! I didn't even know we had that many watches.
Here is my gear shot....finally! :)

My submission is so bad, it's borderline bush-league. With GEAR, the first thing that jumped at me was what I had in my hands as I read the email... so I grabbed my PowerShot SD300 and snapped away at my baby while it was in the middle of a six minute bulb exposure trying to capture the beauty of the Utah starry sky. The result is this borderline offensive shot. Even I have to avert my eyes... but we sometimes have to suffer for the mission!

You guys are some of the most dedicated agents we've ever seen. Bennett crawls on his back under a greasy car to shoot the differential. Shetha shot at least a hundred images all over town to find the ones she wanted. jmbead took apart a houseful of watches. And Dellplain submitted even though he's thousands of miles from home. You guys rock!

All in the name of the Mission! Glad to be a part of it!
I completely forgot about this shot that I took earlier today of this pair of rock climbers. Needless to say that they came prepared with their GEAR. Watching them descend was one of the many highlights of this spectacular trip. Utah rocks!

Hello!
This is my first assignment, what an awesome idea. I came up with 2 I couldn't choose between, so I hope it's ok I post them both. Can't wait for the next assignment!

I almost don't want to post mine after the amazingness of "say cheese"'s photos...

From the description (so you don't have to go to my picture and see it and comment on it if you don't want to--lol): When I saw this weeks Mission 24, I knew that this was my shot. All my childhood I played with LEGO toys. Into adulthood, I still maintain my collection and I also earn money selling the toys with my toy company. This set is a large technical crane model with lots of gears. Though small, those gears run a fully operational mini-machine, with raising an lower crane boom, and more.

I knew what I wanted to do moments after getting this mission call, but things being as they aways are, I didn't have time to edit it. I'm submitting it anyway with a quick 30 minute editing job and hoping beyond hope that my clock is three minutes fast and it wasn't three minutes past the deadline when I did the actual submission. :-)

I wanted something other than gears, so I set out to see what kind of mechanical gear the Hawthorne Bridge had to offer. Along the way, I came across a man gearing it up to scale a building and wash windows, but could not get a shot with the light that I desired.
When I came to the spot in the photo, I really wanted to get beneath and shoot, but that would have surely gotten me run over, so I settled for this view. It was odd because all the cars going by made the bridge bounce and it was unsettling while shooting.

Not taken in the last 24 hours, but relevant to the mission keyword is this photo taken at Disneyland California. Bet you can't tell me where it is in Disneyland either. If you think you do, post a guess and see if you're right.

Attention agents -
Mission Gear is now complete.
Wow! Headquarters is most impressed. Agents truly geared up a notch for this mission, posting more shots than ever before. What made the difference this time? We’d love to hear your feedback.
Let’s debrief: On this week’s mission, we learned which of our agents are anal retentive and which are not so much. We had excellent submissions from depths as well as from heights. Some shots were vivid and bright, while others were more muted and contemplative. Some of you got it in gear, while others simply got into their gear.
There are many other shots in the pool and all are very nicely done. Look around and spread Flickr love with a comment or two. Don't forget to drop by the discussion thread after each mission to share your photo and tell us more about it.
Here’s this week’s directive: Don’t let your guard down. Watch your inbox. Gear up for the next mission!

Yeah, Reb is good at the roundup. I say we let him do it from now on!
Just got back from the mission I needed so much gear for and saw the many killer entries from our many killer agents. If I don't get to say it personally, let me say here that I love what you're doing with these themes. I especially like to see new agents jump in without hesitation.
As Mr. X asked above, "What was it about mission GEAR that you guys liked?"
And are there any other types of missions (besides theme-and-response) that you'd like to do in the future?
Head over to Name Your Missions to cast your vote. We're listening...
[And don't forget to invite your friends to our little party. The more the merrier.]

Since I always get the mission while I am at work I grab my camera phone to find my photo.
As ropes are the tackle that make a boat function so are pipes and valves the tackle that make a fermenter function.
