About The Mimbar & Mihrab
This group is dedicated to photos of Mimbars and Mihrabs, which are two archetcetural features in Mosques accross the Islamic world.
The Mihrab is a niche built into the part of the mosque that faces towards Mecca towards which worshippers face during salat (prayer). The finest decor and craftsmanship are often lavished on this feature of the mosque, since it is often one of the buildings penultimate architectural characteristics.
The Mimbar (pulpit) is a raised platform from which sermons are delivered. Usually adjacent to the Mihrab, they too are made with great effort and care. It is said when Genghis Khan entered Samarqand he mistook the Mimbar for the seat of the Sultan's throne and so placed himself on it to declare his victor!
