Noguchi coffee table - real or real old fake?

view profile

FLSHBK says:

I found this old "Noguchi" table and am concerned that it is not authentic. My research has not turned up any just like it, but how long ago did they start faking this table? It's obviously decades old. The glass is really suspect due to the shape, and the base doesn't seam to have the right shape at the joining point.

Any help would be appreciated!

This looks suspiciously like the table I reported to Ebay last month. It was posted as the real deal but is obviously not. Besides the kidney vs rounded triangular shape of the glass, true Noguchi tables are made with two solid pieces of wood. You can see the wood seam at the bend of wood pieces. Authentic tables would not have this seam.

The Ebay post I reported was later edited to state clearly that it vintage but merely Noguchi-inspired.

Thanks for the reply Angie. I don't think this seller had this one listed before and really doesn't know about this type of furniture. It was all in an estate. I picked up a set of 4 DCWs that are definitely authentic and from the Evans era.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. Still might be worth $25 though. ;)

Yes, $25 isn't a bad price for any usable coffee table. I was surprised to see the one I saw posted on Ebay go for more than $500 even after the post was altered to clearly reflect that it was not an original Naguchi.

It's definitely an "inspired" piece. Personally, I would spend my $25 elsewhere

This are two Noguchi Tables, you can see, in the join, that it's really not the same sort of pieces ; the two pieces of wood have not the right geometry . And also, the glass have not the good form (but can be remake because it's broke). It's clear that this one is a not really good copy of Noguchi.

I agree with you all. Thank you very much for helping me confirm that I wasn't passing up some sort of early prototype. That would be my luck. LOL!

I saw it in person yesterday; and it was definitely not a good copy. Better to check with the experts first, though!

Stay away from these high end design icons on ebay....they are so overproduced (and poorly), it's truly sickening.
