03 Apr 09 - Please be sure to tag your photos with at least the number of the road (i.e.; "m-99") that it's taken on. If we can't tell it's an M road, it'll be deleted. Sorry.

About Michigan Highways

Michigan's State Routes bear the "M-nn" designation and route markers with the familiar diamond shape and block-letter "M" at the top. Michigan was the second jurisdiction in the world to both designate and sign a numbered system of state trunkline highways in 1918-19, and now has over 6,000 miles of State Highways (not including Interstate & US Routes).

Michigan also has the nation's only state highway that doesn't allow motor vehicles, M-185, located on Mackinac Island.

What's OK here:

• This group is for photos taken on any numbered Michigan State roadway. That means if the road is something like "M-1", M-99, M-153 or the like, it's OK for this group. (The "M" means it's an official Michigan State road.)

• Photos can be of most anything (historical sites, places, signs, parades, small towns, etc) as long as they're located directly on a Michigan State highway.

• Ephemera directly related to Michigan's State highways, or postcards of businesses (gone or still around) are also welcome, but the business must be located directly on a Michigan State highway.

What we're not looking for:

• No US Routes, unless it's also concurrent with a "M" road.
• No County roads.
• Please, no photos of your yard, your family hanging out and similar stuff because you happen to live on a state highway.

The tags on your photo should indicate what state highway the photo was taken on, i.e. "M-66". Additionally, it'd be nice if you also included the city/town (or nearest) of the photo's location. Here's an example:

If you do not tag your photos in this manner, we'll have to guess if your photo was taken on a state trunkline. If we can't tell, it will be removed from the pool. Sorry.

If you'd like further information on the Michigan State Trunkline system, the best website you can visit is Michigan Highways. There's endless information and history about all of Michigan's State highways to be found there. It's -my- "go to" site when I need highway information. (Thanks to michiganhighways.org for some of the information presented here.)

Please help us grow, especially now during our startup!

If you see photos you think should be in this group, simply cut-n-paste this into a comment box to invite the photo:
