About Mesaba

Photos of Mesaba's people, planes, and places. Mesaba was a regional airline that started in 1946 in Minnesota. Eventually it entered into codeshare agreements with Republic Airlines, and then Northwest Airlines when Republic and Northwest Merged in the mid 1980s. With Northwest, Mesaba expanded from a hub in MSP to also DTW and MEM. The company has flown many aircraft, but the more recent examples are the CRJ-900/200, Saab-340, AVRO RJ-85, Dash-8, Fokkers, Metroliners, Beech 99s, and others from the 1940s to the 1970s. With Northwest's merger into Delta airlines the planes adopted new paint and a few new destinations. However Delta decided to eliminate the Saab-340 flying in 2010 and also sold the company to Pinnacle Airlines who were able to temporarily find flying for a few Saabs with US Airways. The CRJs were merged into Pinnacle Airlines. And so it was that Mesaba's final flight took place under US Airways colors on a Turboprop. Mesaba was the oldest regional airline in the United States at 65 years when it was split up and had the distinction of a flawless safety record.
