The fact of the matter is that loads of people come to Melbourne for the graffiti - it was one of the reasons I came!

The Herald Sun was banging the drum again today with another article on grafitti vandals. Of course they only showed ugly (imo) pictures to prove their point. The article states:
According to Love Melbourne and police, Melbourne is rated by the vandals responsible as one of the top five cities for graffiti in the world in terms of quantity and "quality" of the pieces.
Quality, hell yeah. And note how Melbourne has gone from "one of the worst 5 cities..." to "one of the top 5 cities...", in the space of a few days.

now 3AW (conservative and most unfunky radiostation in town) has noticed that this might be a interesting subject too. i'll speak to neil mitchell on his morning show about it sometime around 9 and 10am tomorrow.
if they make this a talk back thing please call and tell neil and his listeners what you think of street art in our city and wether you think it should be removed or not.
keep melbourne colorful!!

I hate talkback radio (trial by media at its worst), and I have a bad feeling you won't be getting a fair go...

don't worry guys, i know neil is anti graff and even anti governmental art funding -- i have encountered with him before (i slept in and didn't end up on on his show that time though ... what a great trick!!).
anyway, i'm prepared and i have some media experience under my belt, so i hopefully won't have to shit myself.
see it that way, if i wouldn't talk to them they would just bash street art without letting our arguments go on air. now they at least let me speak and make my point. wether they agree or disagree is a different story ...
yeled, i don't know what their frequency is, but they have a internet stream on their website www.3aw.com.au
the talkback number is 9696 1278 ... speak to you tomorrow then ;-)

most people that called would have loved to smash my face .... what do you expect from a 3AW audience?!
Neil was actually pretty fair and allowed me to make my points and bring my arguments. oof course he stuck to his position that i'm an illegal vandal, but that's ok and exactly what i expected ... it's his job to.
he got really upset when i mentioned that the City of Melbourne officially supported our stencil festival last year (www.stencilfestival.com) with a $ 15.000 arts grant.
Councilor Fraser Brindley (CoM, supporting a pro-active approach to graffiti) who was interviewed afterwards standing in front of the graff' covered walls in Hosier Lane had to cop a lot of shit from neil for the arts grant that went to "a festival supporting and encouraging illegal behaviour", but he did well too and for being a councilor he said pretty great things.
Probably not many opinions where changed but a point was made.

interesting side note:
as i said, last years MSF was supported by the City of Melbourne (CoM) and therefor it wasn't only opend by Penny Hutchincon, president of Arts Victoria, but also by a representative of the CoM, which was Cr David Wilson.
the same Cr Wilson was the head of the 'Community and Culture Committee' that had to decide over the CoM's graffiti strategy. not only did he vote for the zero tollerance strategy, he also threw in his casting vote (as head of the committee) which was the deciding vote to carry the zero tollerance motion. go figure ...
very sad is, that the CoM actually published a draft for the strategy earlier last year which looked pretty good. it actually showed some understanding of the culture and the subject matter and outlined distinguished approaches towards the different styles of street art and also different areas in the city. it suggested high tolerance zones for artist to express their culture and a lot of other good ideas of how to deal in a constructive way with street art.
the draft accepted the fact that graffiti is an expression of our society and therefor can't be just neglected.

I second what Toots Fontaine said
The Graffiti here is what makes Melbourne what it is
One of the reasons i love walking the streets of Melbourne. Sounds to me like Someone in charge is trying to "hide" the real Melbourne.

yep i just listened to the tape of it.
I thought you handeled yourself well satta, good job. ;)
Neil started off friendly and by asking a few questions. Something like "you know its illegal but you still continue to do it despite not having the land owners permission.
Once you said yes to that question he then used that in defence when ever people had a positive thing to say about street art. He kept on repeating the fact that "Satta" knows its illegal but continues to do it without permission.
Neil I thought as well as the first caller were very ignorant and very narrow minded. They couldn't differentiate tags and stencils. Satta made it clear that he was a "street and stencil artist" yet neil felt it compulsary to say he was a graffiti vandal.
I think it would be worth speaking to someone like amac who conducts street art tours and has even appeared on a lonely planet doco, highlighting melbournes scene.
I also like the way the reporter in hosier lane could only pick out two things in the whole laneway. A scribble saying "monkey says relax" and a stencil of some sheep which neil immediately blamed on "satta's stencil crew".

Sounds like a cynical vote-buying exercise. He probably misjudged public opinion in his ward, and discovered that his political survival rests on riding the public backlash over grafitti than obtaining street cred from a bunch of latte-sipping urban bohemians. And wasn't the council blasted for spending tens of thousands of dollars on consulting grafitti artists, oops sorry criminals, for that draft?

oh yeah another thing, it may of been a small mistake mentioning the grant. As soon as you mentioned the amount of money spent as well he had a field day.
one more point too, what is the difference between companies shoving a huge billboard in our face. They can put them whereever they want. We have no decision over that. I'm sure people don't like seeing billboards.

Money talks, I'm afraid. (People with money can do anything they like; those without just get done over) And as long as the content falls within relevant laws, perfectly legal too.
By the same token if you have the money, there's nothing stopping you from buying a wall or any other public space and spraying to your heart's content.
I wish had the money to buy a whole laneway or warehouse...

hey guys, thanks for the feedback.
i pointed jay (the journalist who did the interview with cr brindley in hosier lane) toward amac since he was gonna be in his lane anyway. apparently he didn't pick up that lead.
skizm, i don't think it was a mistake to mention the grant. it is no secret, everyone can look it up on the CoM website.
... you've got the interview on tape? could you make me a copy for our archive? that'd be awesome!
