October Flickr Meet - BBQ & DIY - Albert Park Lake Sunday 5th October

view profile

ziz is a group administrator ziz  Pro User  says:

Hi folk, well spring has sprung so its time for the first BBQ meet of the season.

We shall be returning to our usual spot at Albert Park lake.
The area has bbq facilities, benches, toilets.. swans.

We have a bit of a fun twist in store for the meet this time.

The Melbourne Silver Mine will be putting on a bit of a show of DIY film development... So there will be film cameras for folks to play with, shoot with, and then we will be developing the film, and creating some prints from them... all at the picnic bench.

Giving you a chance to see how easy and fun analogue photography can be,.. as long as you dont mix your developer with your sauv blanc.

MSMInc will have a bit of a sausage sizzle going on as well, so, all you need to do is bring yourself down, a drink, some gold coins for your snag needs and prepare to be amazed by the wonders of chemistry.

There's no charge for taking part in the DIY developing bonanza, any money raised stays within the non-profit incorporated association Melbourne Silver Mine Inc to fund future photographic events.

Meet details:
Sunday 5th October, 1pm

Albert Park Lake picnic area
Albert road end of albert park lake, right near the water between Lakeside drive and Aquatic Drive.

@scary ... if you are thinking slide film with c-41 chems, then no - too difficult to keep the temps up in this situation. If you are thinking colour negs in b&w chems, then sorta possible, but wouldn't want to do it for this project. We will have medium format cameras loaded with b&w film for people to try out.

Mmmmmm ... yeah OK. Just to streamline everything, we want to use the same film at the same speed so the dev times are the same for everything. I think we will be using Tri-X400. If it's a bright sunny day, then they'll be a little overexposed, but if it's a bit cloudy, then we could be close enough ... then again, we could seperate the Holgi and develop according to prevailing light ... but in reality, we'll see how we go. Bring 'em anyway.

brappy♥ the melbourne silver mine will have some food on the bbq, any proceeds raised from that go back into the silver mine to fund fuure analogue photo projects (several members who met on flickr started a non profit group earlier this year) .. but it will be cheap, cheerful and simple... so bring something to drink.

You can of course bring your own food if you prefer, even bbq food, no obligation here.

thescatteredimage  Pro User  says:

Okey dokey kids!

The plan is basically like this ... we will have a few medium format cameras loaded with tri-X400 which people can share and take a few shots with. The number of shots per person will depend on how many want to participate, but we are expecting to only run through about 3 or so rolls (36 images) ... this is because of the development process and other constraints like time etc.

We may be able to do a couple more depending on timing and resources, but I only really want to develop 1 batch (3 rolls) or at the most two.

This will be a demonstration to see how easy it is to get a useable negative and hopefully kick start a few people into investing in some equipment themselves and having a go at developing at home.

So don't worry about bringing your own film - the wonderful Melbourne Silvermine Inc will provide stuff.

Yay!

@Matt ... that will all depend on how many people we have at any given time ... we will allow interested people to have a few shots and when a few rolls are filled up, then we will develop.

Mind you the meet kicks off at 1pm ... plus a little bit of time for stragglers.

Probably fair to say that if people turn up at 4pm, they prolly won't see any developing of negatives happening ... probably ... but there will be other stuff going on.
