A second-hand nikon D70 or canon 350d will give you more room to grow, and because they're a bit older, will be as cheap as a second-hand D50. They're both excellent cameras.
Holgas come as DSLRs now? Hell of an upgrade from the last model...

Yeah I think I might check out the camera houses in elizabeth street tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up a deal with the camera I've got at the moment.

I have a EOS 1000F SLR and I have the lenses for that (75 - 300mm & 35 - 80mm) so I'm wanting to get a DSLR so I can use them. It's annoying having to get the photos printed and all that jazz as well when I can just plug a DSLR into a computer.
Cheers.

For my 2c I reckon it's hard to go past the Pentax K100D new for less than $700 if you want something new rather than S/Hand

I'm not so sure you'll get the best price on second hand equipstuff from the stores on Elizabeth. One had an ef 24-70 f2.8 L in the window a few weeks ago for $1800. That's how much I paid for my one ~new~ from an EBay store which operates out of Clayton.
I'd be looking at ebay or trading post and going round and carefully inspecting equipment before buying.

if you buy a DSLR from private, you can safely assume that the sensor will be dirty, cleaning costs around 100$.

My nanas offered to pay for a brand new dslr for me - you guys still think I should get a Nikon D50/70? I'm thinking of getting a new EOS 400D - I've all ready got two EF lens, a 35 - 85 + a 75 - 300. Properly the best way to go in the long run.

Just go for the 400D then if you've already got the lenses. I thought I already told you this before Sutti. ;]

Give consideration to getting a battery grip at some point for that camera. Sure helps making it easier to hold and find :)

The add-ons I'd probably recommend you start off with would be a circular polarising filter for your main lens and a spare battery. (I got caught by an empty battery a couple of times before buying a 2nd one.)
I use a 400D and briefly considered getting the battery grip for travel, for when I wouldn't have access to 240v power for recharging and so would need to run off AAs, but didn't end up getting it. I still haven't tried one, but don't have any issues holding or operating mine without one.
Get the Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens. It's often quite useful, and is ridiculously cheap. You can get them new for under $100.
A tripod allows you to do a lot of things that you otherwise couldn't, and even a cheap one would probably be a great investment if you don't already have one.
As for the flash, I think it depends on what sort of photography you want to do. I'm currently looking at buying one, and will probably get a cheap, old, non-Canon model that would use manual control rather than TTL. Check out strobist.blogspot.com/ for a lot of information about manual flash control and off-camera flash use. If you'd prefer on-camera TTL (point-and-shoot lighting), the Sigma flashes might be a good option, and are a lot cheaper than the Canons.

Wow ... cheers for the advice :D
Yeah I'll grab an extra battery or a charger I'm guessing. At Teds the camera comes with a 18 - 55mm lens so I might hold off on the lens for the moment.
Yeah I've all ready got a tripod .... well my dad has one with his old SLR, so that should do fine :D
Its between the grip and the flash .... I'll see what the shop assistant says :D
Cheers.

If you're otherwise planning on getting the kit lens (18-55mm), I'd recommend spending the extra on a better lens instead of a grip or flash.
I use the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5, and it's fantastic for the price. It's got far better image quality than the kit lens (sharper, less chromatic aberration, less distortion), has a little bit more range, has reasonable rather than zero macro capabitily and has a max aperture 2/3 stop faster.
(Also, expect to pay a lot more for a flash than a battery grip!)

HAHA, yeah I know .... it would be a lot more for the flash :P
I'v got a Canon EF 35 - 80 lens ... I might just make that my *ever day* lens.

I think the 35-80mm is/was a kit lens for film cameras... So it'll be a lot like the 18-50mm, except shifted towards the telephoto range of the zoom. You'll have absolutely no wide angle with it (as wide angle for a Canon APS-C size sensor DSLR is less than 28mm), which you'll probably find quite annoying.
