14 Aug 11 - To all those flickr members, the photos of whom I invite into this group: normally I do add a personal comment on photos that I invite into any group. Here, unfortunately, I cannot manage all the invites and commenting at the same time.
But : I would not have invited your photo unless I valued it very much. Thanks for adding the photos to the group's pool!

Thank you all for contributing to our group.

About Medieval Plants

This group is part of the long term academic project 'Medieval Plant Survey (MPS) / Portal der Pflanzen des Mittelalters (PPM)' (see link below), which actually is just being built up. It is meant to be a pool for modern day plant photography as additional information for those who study the historical subjects either in image, print or writing. In this group we will only admit photos of plants on which information has been handed down from the Middle Ages (general time-frame A.D. 500-1500) through medical / herbal manuscripts either in writing or painting.

We want to include photos of plants in habitat, the habitus of plants (from shoot to dead plant), parts of plants, dried plants or plants prepared for processing, and finally the manufactured drugs or spices. The description of the photos should at least include the botanical name of the plant (following Linnean nomenclature).

I recently realized that there are also digital copies of manuscripts available on flickr: since the public display of these materials is quite rare I want to include relevant - i.e. manuscript pages showing plant depictions - photos in this group.

Thumbnails of the photos added here are displayed on the MPS / PPM website and link back to the group.
