Hey SSC, here are some recipes for gingerbread cookies without molasses:
tinyurl(dot)com(slash)ychz5zj
[jeez! flickr is such a pain about links!!!!]
In general, it does look like corn syrup would be a good substitution. I wouldn't do maple syrup (like I mailed you, I think it would be too thin -- it's actually not very gooey). Some of the people on that thread say honey would work -- I'm not too sure about that, either, but you can always give it a try!
Good luck.

Friday January 1st 2010

I thought I'd start this diary with a bang!
LOL
This is how we rang in the new year... with a whole bunch of fireworks... and rain.. darn frikkin' wet rain!
We went to bed at 4.30am!
The actual day of the first sadly started off with a funeral.. a co-worker passed away rather unexpectedly, they think it was a heart attack. He was 51.
Anyway... we came home and had a late lunch with G's family.
(For all you new comers... G. is my boyfriend. We've been together now about a year, and moved in together in early october...)
We finished off the last of the fireworks, with G's nephews!
I even filmed a few going off... but I can't upload them now.
I'll try later, from home.

Saturday January 2nd 2010

The first day back to semi-normality, after the New Year's.
Shops open, minor traffic... people out and about.
Oddly enough we actually had some sun in the wearly part of the day.
I had grocery shopping to do, a bill to pay... and I also wanted to get my car washed.. not so much for the outside, but for the interior.. which honestly is rather appauling! However, the car wash was closed... oh well..
Pretty much a day of a few errands and small chores...
In the evening we decided to go see a movie. We wanted to go see Sherlock Holmes, with Robert Downey Jr. but it was sold out... we saw an Italian Comedy instead, called "Io e Marilyn" (Me & Marilyn). The mvoie talks about a guy who, as a joke with friends, decides to carry out a Séance.. and not sure who to bring back from the dead... he calls upon Marilyn Monroe. It was rather funny!

Sunday January 3rd 2010

Sunday, G. and I invited my parents over for lunch. They've really only been over to our place once and never for a meal so we figured it was time we poison them invite them over to enjoy my cooking. LOL
As you can see, we set the table nicely, with our brand new purple Ikea glass plates, and green and purple hand blown glasses... (NOT Ikea... LOL).
Too bad the better suited white table cloth was ion the wash... ah well... luckily Martha Stewart wasn't invited...
If you look closely, you'll see art of the typical Italian antipasto: we served sundried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, grilled aubergine (or eggplant, for the USofAers in here) and button mushrooms, all in olive oil... YUM!
For the main course we served (ok, well I cooked...): Linguine pasta with pesto sauce, pan-cooked chicken (not fried...), a side of peas (not bpoiled, but firstly sauteed with onion, then simmered with a very little bit of water and olive oil) and a side of potatoes and vegetable gratin (oven roasted sliced potatoes, cherry tomaties and zucchini).
No one died, apparently... Not bad huh?

Do your parents like G. Especially your MOTHER? Never mess with a Jewish Mother... I know that, but an Italian Jewish Mother? Poor G.. Poor poor poor G! I be she makes my Spanish MiL seem very tame in comparison.... And my MiL once tugged me by my ear across the room!

jallen "To Be" dragonhide Yep, we had fun.. oddly enough...
I think i like my parents more, now that i only see them once a week! Hahhaha
LMFAO, my mom's actually rather tame and level-headed... she's very "international"... and not the typical Italian mom... she's cool.
My dad on the other hand... erm.. he's a bit "much" at times ahaha
He likes to often be center stage and loves to debate and have his say on just about anything... takes some getting used to and some patience...
We're rather loud, us N. family LOL
But yeah, they both seem to really like him. G's very likeable honestly. And they love the place too!

Tuesday January 5th 2010

Yay... it's a holiday here tomorrow!!!! Woot! In Italy we celebrate La Befana, which actually falls on the day of the Epiphany.
It's a day for kids really, when they get stockings full of candy, chocolate gold coins... or sugar coal, if you've been bad...
It's also tradition to go to Piazza Navona, where there are lots of market stalls set up (throughout the entire Christmas period really...) and everyone goes to buy candy, play at the fair-like booths that offer all sorts of games and prizes... There's even a merry-go-round.
I'm hoping to go with G. but the weather's been real nasty lately, and it's most likely going to poor tomorrow as well, so there's a high chance we won't go..

hey lee... well i'm not sure if i wrote in here on in another thread but, i actually only bought a film, the one that simon used for his photo with his 3D specs, called "Pistil"... but in reality i think you get more than just that single film.
So now i have:
lenses: Helga viking, Kaimal Mark II, Jimmy, John S
flashes: standard, cadet blue gel, redeye gel, laser lemon gel
film: Ina's 1969, Blanko, Kodot verichrome, Pistil,
Apparently $0.99 gets you a long way!
Thanks Shannon, I am really liking what we're doing to the place too... as you can see we're trying to keep it very bright and colourful without going overboard hahaha

Wednesday January 6th 2010

We took it very easy today.. one of those lazy PJ days really... being a holiday and all.
Woke up at 11! Sure felt good... especially considering I didn't feel at all well last night and ended up throwing up. Something about dinner apparently didn't sit right with my tummy....
And today I noticed tiny little red marks on my neck... but not on the skin, but rather underneath... like, you know when your skin goes all funny pimply when you get a hickey? Sort of like that..
Thing is, I have no idea why.. maybe some sort of allergic reaction?
Anyways.... needless to say we didn't venture out today...

The rain seems to have finally stopped... at least for now.

I took advantage of the sales during my lunch break and bought a brown down jacket... real pretty too!

Well, Alex, as one who has children, I can say that I think it has been one of the biggest struggles to adjust to, the lack of personal time. I think that being an older mom made it especially difficult, as I'm so used to having time and independence to do what I want. But children are always changing, and they become more independent, day by day.
The meal that you made for your folks sound like it was wonderful. Yum!

Now i can just do it anywhere, directly from myphone!
LOL
LOL You do? Isn't it comfy? Hahaha
I know how you mean.. sure you give up a lot, but I'm sure children reward you with so much, they have to give back to you... nothing in comparison to "keeping" a house... LOL
Yeah.. for a radio called Nekkid Radio. It's been around a while and of course it was all just a hobby, no one made any money off of it.. in fact the DJs actually paid a tiny bit as a means of being able to keep the radio, server, licence etc running...
Good times!
