Bitterly cold and windy day with a little snow flurries in the morning. My son and I took a walk in downtown Asheville for a while and then decided we wanted to eat Greek food. So we went to a restaurant near our home and had Soupa Avgolemeno and Salad. The bread had just come out of the oven and was served with herbs and olive oil for dipping.
Now it is night and snow is predicted. I am sitting here editing the days photographs and eating olives and oranges and listening to Greek rembetic music.
Thinking of warmer climates and the Mediterranean I guess.

I once stayed in Scotland with a man, Bugs McKeith, who was a climber. He had been with the British in Antartica. His job was to climb and name mountains. He said that sometimes when he awoke in the morning, he would reach over to dip his cup into the water jar and the water would freeze the moment the cup touched it. He let me read his journal. Somedays the only entry was one word. "Snow".
I woke to a white world this morning.

Wow...love the focus, the color and the snow.
I hike in the Adirondacks in the summer and at night we enjoy reading the log books in the lean-to's. I remember one particular entry..."Sept 15th: woke to a surprise coating of snow" Decided not to hike up there too much after AUGUST. ;)

He was killed quite a few years ago ice climbing. Yes, he was a very interesting man. About one or two years after I had been in Scotland, I was walking in Yosemite's climber's camp when I heard a "yoo hoo, Gypsy." I looked over and there was his mother sitting in the back of a camper. She invited me over for a martini! Ha ha. She had flown to Canada where Bugs was living at the time and they had driven down to California in his pick up truck with a camper shell over it. I said that I thought Alisdair (that was his given name and she refused to call him Bugs) was a kind and gentle man until he got behind the wheel of a car. It always amazed me that this otherwise very pleasant man became a monster when he drove, cursing everyone out that came in his path with words that would make your ears catch on fire. Her response was classic. "Yes, Alisdair is not a very happy driver".

Great start to your diary. YOu are a wonderful writer, as well as bird photographer. Your northern mockingbird looks a cheerful fellow. I love the beauty of the Red-bellied wood pecker.
I found this link to the song of the mockingbird, just in case, like I was, anyone wondered what they sounded like.

I think the mockingbirds in California have a more beautiful repertoire than the ones that I have heard so far in North Carolina. It will be interesting to hear what they sound like in spring here.

I love birdsong. I have a friend who was tormented by a mockingbird, though. It's favorite perch was right outside her door, and his song just bounced through her apartment as if in an echo chamber. She's since moved to D.C. and is no longer troubled by it. :-)

I love birdsong too Emil. So far my favorite song in my garden is the Carolina wren's. Although the catbird is a mimic too like the mockingbird and they both have lovely songs--sometimes. I've always enjoyed the mockingbird especially when they sing at night in the rain.

I love the canyon wren's song. They are a distinctive little jaunty bird out there in the desert.
And the Swainson's thrush is another of my faves. Makes me feel like I'm in a fairy land. The audio example I linked to is close in.... when you aren't right up on them and multiple birds are calling at once, it's beautiful.
