I'm Imperatrix. I began this diary in July 2007, as my family (me, my Consort, and our two girls Impera and Trixie) began our one year of living in New Hampshire while the Consort spends his sabbatical year writing a book. This diary records our adventures.

The adventure started here.

Happy New Year!

We had snow all day today. Even though the dog hates the cold, she had to go out at some point, so I took her for a walk around the neighborhood. As you can see, it was snowing pretty hard.

hello imperatrix. no snow like that where i live :) i'd love to spend some time in a cold climate one day. i've been to the skifields here in oz but i've never experienced suburban, everyday snow.

Because everything is closed on January 1, resolutions really begin on January 2. I've been swimming regularly since December, but starting now, I'll be going three times a week for sure.

Locker room

One plus of being a freelancer is that you can juggle your schedule to do things like go to the gym when it is less crowded (I know if I had to wake up at 5 am to go, I wouldn't). One negative of freelancing is that then you end up going when all the retired folks are there to do their water aerobics.

They are a sweet bunch (and very comfortable in their bodies, which is a big plus: I can't stand those people who in the locker room do a pretty complicated gymnastics routine to get dressed without letting the towel drop from under their arms -- we all have the same bits, and none of us have hardbodies, for crying out loud!), but they are chatty.

I took this picture surreptitiously because I wasn't sure one is allowed to take photos in the locker room, right?

threed: Snow is fun for the first month or so. By April, you just want the damned stuff to be gone!

Chewbacca: Not all snow is alike! If it is too dry, then the snow won't pack and you can't make snowballs. Then, there are the days when it is too cold to be outside too long. For example, right now it is -4 F (-20 C). With windchill, it feels like -18 (-28). Pretty chilly!

NIce that you have the freedom to get to the gym whenevery you can. I usually have to make arangemnts for the kid before I can go work out. Sometimes it is just not worth the trouble!

... Snow? We don't really get snow here in Victoria, BC. Canada may be an arctic wonderland, but Victoria is just pretty. Born and raised on the prairies, but I've become spoiled and am always amazed when I see it.

I have this vivid image of a kid walking up to the playground wanting to jump around on it, but sulking because it's covered in snow. I don't think kids work like that.

As for the pool... Well, I tried to get into a swimming routine, but I felt a bit ridiculous in the water. Mostly because I swim like a tiger in the ocean (less fur, though). Good on you for pickin' up a routine.

(Out of curiousity: are you a freelance writer or photographer (or ... spy)? I've some vague interests in becoming a freelance writer, but am mostly scared of the idea altogether.

As promised, we went over to Grandma's tonight and played with the puppies. The girls had such fun, I took a ton of photos, and it kept Grandma's mind occupied (she was stressing about the Iowa caucuses [she's been working nonstop for the Obama campaign]).

The pictures I took aren't particularly good, but you can see the entire set here. I couldn't pick one that I thought represented the night best, so I'm taking Big Brother up on the new rules and made a mosaic:

The creation of a puppy pile
1. You start with one puppy..., 2. ...then some more want to snuggle..., 3. ...before you know it, you're covered in puppies!

Sweet coffee: I usually go with my swimsuit under my sweatpants, so getting undressed is a breeze. And although I shower there, I just throw my gym clothes back on and get dressed in my regular clothes at home.

Of course, this is only possible because I work from home. If I had to dress up for the office after my swim, I agree, it would be a big pain in the ass.

5 January 2008

This day did not turn out the way I expected. After a relaxed morning, the Consort took the girls for their riding lesson, as he usually does. I took the dog for a nice long walk. I took several photos, wondering which one I'd post on the diary. Would it be the first one I took?

Winter vista

Or perhaps I'd post another dog in the snow picture -- sometimes I just don't understand our dog. Or maybe I'd use the snapshot of the little snow bird I saw in the berry bush.

Silly me, focusing on such trite stuff. Because while I was fussing over this, Impera (my 13-year-old) fell off her horse (yes, she was wearing a helmet, but...). When they came home, the Consort and Trixie were a bit quiet. You see, Impera couldn't remember falling off and she cried, not right away but about 15 minutes later. And her head hurt. And she felt nauseous. She took a bath but only stayed in about 3 minutes. Then she wanted to go to sleep. This freaked me out, because back in the day you weren't supposed to let someone with a possible concussion sleep. The Consort looked online, and it seems it's OK to sleep, in fact they need the sleep. You need to see a doctor if there is "persistent vomiting" (what the hell does that mean? Anything over once? After three times? What? What????)

So I checked her pupils (they reacted fine), and then she slept. I'd go in to check on her from time to time, but people in comas breathe, so hearing her breathe wasn't much of a consolation (I had no idea what I was checking for, except I noticed she hadn't vomited).

At dinner time, the Consort went in to see if she wanted any food. We figured, if she was well enough to eat, she should have that chance, and if she still needed to sleep she'd be able to fall back asleep quickly.

She got out of bed and spent the evening with us.

After all, she didn't want to miss watching the Buffy the Vampire Slayer video we had gotten from Netflix.

I suppose she's OK, then. *sigh of relief*

whew.. I am so glad Imperia is Ok.. oh my goodness.. i hope that doesn't permanently scare off her from horses.. get her on that horse soon as you are all able to!

I just showed Merche your story.. she shuddered- it hits too close to home for her. She once worked with the Royal Horses in Madrid.. and one stallion she rode took off and left her mid-air cartoon-like. She landed on concrete and nearly lost her kidney over it. Ouch. One month hospital stay and years later, she's fine now.

Be careful (needless to say I know.. but) you guys. Horses are so big and cannot be underestimated no matter how kind and well trained they are.

Hugs to Imperia, glad she's OK.

Thanks, everybody. This happened at my sister-in-law's barn, so if it were to happen anywhere, that would be the best, you know? (And check out the picture I saw yesterday on flickr -- talk about scary!) Impera had a headache on Sunday, but not so bad that she couldn't go skiing with her dad & sister.

Rebecca, yeah, one of the worst parts of being a parent is feeling absolutely helpless when your kid is hurt. (And yes, Basenjis don't "woof woof" ro "yip yip". They do make happy noises and sad noises, but nothing constant and annoying like regular dogs.)

jallen, Merche was in the hospital for *a month*? That must have been terribly serious and dangerous for her and her family. Wow.

Elisa, I know, it is too disgusting to think about for too long!

Emil, hey, I think we heard your shout last night. You have a great carrying voice! ;-) We were watching Disc 4 of Season 7. We've been renting the discs in order since March of 2006, and we're almost done. I can't believe it. Two discs left! What will we do with ourselves when there will be no more Buffy to watch?! (And don't suggest Firefly, we've already watched the one and only one season Joss Whedon filmed.)

We celebrate Epiphany by baking a cake with a bean in it. The person who finds the bean is queen or king for the day. This year, I figured, why have the cake in the evening, and so have only an hour or two of one's reign? Why not bake the bean into morning muffins?

So that is what we did.

Milk and Honey muffins

If you're curious, you might like to see who won, and perhaps even check for proof that the bean actually existed.

It's amazing how much stuff remains in containers, and then how much container there is (and packaging to hold the container) for small amounts of stuff--cosmetics are particularly bad about this. I guess they want you to feel better about the amount of money you spend for an ounce (or less) of stuff.

Hope you're happy with the outcome of the primary.

Jan5: Hope your daughter (nor you) is not put off riding by that accident , or by that phenomenal picture of the rearing horse. Glad she's OK.

Jan7: Scary about all the stuff we spend money on and throw away.

Jan8: The caravan moves on, leaving a lot of mess and a faint bad smell behind. And there is still a long way, and a lot of money, to go. I forgot, you had a stake in both the early political races. I see on the news this morning that women voters came late and strong for Mrs Clinton after her display of emotion the other evening, so I guess we do know how you voted LOL.

Pibette: I always thought *France* had the politically engaged unions? But yeah, I do think the country is too big.

Tommy: Yeah, I rarely buy cosmetics, partially for the ridiculousness of the pricing. Nope, not happy. But not distraught, either. 2.5% is really not a big difference, and anyway, two weeks ago, Clinton was ahead, so things are still in flux.

CG: Yeah, my parents are always having to "explain" things to relatives and acquaintances. But I do think that starting out in two small states, where the people really have a chance to hear and be heard by the candidates, is important. That would never be possible in a place like NY or CA.

Simon: Well, we had a warm day yesterday, so all the older folks, who are more frightened by change than the young, ventured out to vote (dang! we should have had a cold, icy-road day!). I firmly believe that the reason Dean tanked in Iowa 8 years ago was that on primary night, the older voters came out and were swayed by the dirty lying mailers that Gephardt sent out on the last day.

SSC: Hmmm. Boy, now I'm considered similar to diarists' moms? I'm not that old!!! ;-0

Hey Rob!
1/1: "Like your Zephyr, I am a short-haired African dog" - you had me laughing out loud!

1/6: I may be a socialist, but I'm no entitlist!

1/8: Hey! That's not even funny! ;-)

9 January 2008

We're had the typical January thaw here the past few days. One nice thing about it is the morning mist from warming snow. I wanted to get a picture of it, but i almost missed it this morning! Today was the last day to do it, because right now the wind is blowing like the bejeesus and a cold front is sweeping in.

mist 3

I wasn't sure which picture to use. The one up here now is the one with the best mist, I think. But I like the piercing sun in this one. And this one looks good, too. I'd love to hear what the more photographically inclined of you would pick and why. I'm always open to training my "eye", you see.

I think the one you selected for your photo for the 9th is the best of the three mist pictures--at least the mist is most prominent in the one from the 9th. Have you considered a crop to a square for the picture for the 9th? Leave the bottom part of the frame in but crop at the top just above the top of the hills to show a tiny bit of sky and the curve of the hills. It does place the horizon and the mist dead center of the frame but the center of the frame isn't nearly so dull in a square frame as it is in the 3:2 ratio of 35mm film (and many digital cameras).

Of course, I'm proposing that you remove the space at the top that @ElisaHH likes so much. :)

On balance I think you made the right choice of picture, but it doesn't really matter too much.

Sorry about the tongue-in-cheek comment about Jan8 - I should learn not to make any comment at all about a process that I am not engaged in personally, and which people take seriously. I continue to observe with interest from afar, as I have done pretty intently since the 1960 election, which has some similarities with this year.

Rob: "it doesn't really matter too much" ... because they're all equally bad? ha ha -- just joking. Oh, Rob, I had a smiley at the end of my response, I totally got your ribbing. Believe me, I love banter and bicker.

For a long time my mother thought the Consort and I were on the outs because we joke in a very teasing way. I'd rather have friends who can push the limits a bit (which your comment wasn't, AT ALL) than friends who are never very comfortable around each other.

No worries!

Tommy: Thanks! I went back and cropped the pic in iPhoto as a square, and you're right, it does highlight the mist more that way. I am a sucker for brilliant sun, like Elisa, which is why I hadn't thought of that.

Elisa: Thanks to you too! If you like the sky part, I would suggest taking a peek at that first one I linked to, powerful sunlight in that one!

I thought I wasn't going to participate in the self portrait challenge. But then, I got an idea.

Self portrait
Self portrait
A portrait of ourselves
A portrait of how we see ourselves
A portrait of how we see

Thanks for all the nice words, guys. I had lots of fun with that self portrait. Emil, you hit the nail on the head -- Basenjis really are cats in dogs' clothing: they hate water, they prefer high places (the back of the couch), they keep obsessively clean, etc., etc., and so forth!

The simple pleasures: a patch of winter sunlight, and a clean kitchen floor.

The driveway is fine dirt, which in the winter gets brought in on the bottom of snow/slush/mud covered shoes. We take our shoes off by the door, but the kitchen floor is often filthy. I snapped a picture right after it had been mopped.

Aaaaaaah.

BTW...Did you see the recent national poll released yesterday? The current 'front runners' are Hillary (by 15 points!) and McCain. That'd be a tough choice. I'm not a big Hillary fan (those tears were soooooo faked) and McCain is as left a Republican as you're gonna get.

Eight years ago, I remember turning to the Consort and saying, " You know, I think I could be OK with a Republican in the White House, if it's McCain." But I really haven't liked his pandering to extreme right causes (NRA, evangelicals), even though it did seem to backfire on him early on.

But I like to take positive things from this graphic of a NYT/CBS poll, that shows Obama's perceived electability up 21 percentage points (to over twice what it was a month ago), and Clinton's electability down 16 percentage points. Now, if only Edwards would bow out soon.

So you think Edwards vaters are Obama voters? Interesting. You may be right. I worry about Hillary's negatives. 40% of those polled overall said there's NO WAY they would ever vote for her. It's tough to get 50%+ when you only have 60% to work with.

Funny snippet I was reading on Friday where McCain has hinted at selecting Joe Lieberman as his running mate. The most left wing R with the most right wing D...what a combo.

Yeah, I remember feeling the same way about McCain 8 years ago.

Then again, I remember hearing Ron Paul when he first started making noise and thinking, 'Now there's a Republican I can listen to without wanting to scoop my eyes out and stuff 'em in my ears.'

Now, not so much.

That is a very wintry, yet sunny scene that Zephyr is looking out at. and a very clean floor.

I said I wouldn't get involved in election discussions, but after reading this and other articles recently I am intrigued, so I'll ask a question: just why do you and so many others seem so committed to an Obama candidacy? I have sensed there is a deep yearning in the USA for change, for a new kind of politics, and for some racial reconciliation. And yet he is a sitting Senator, his campaign is presumably funded by certain interests, he cannot entirely be free of lobbyists and vested interests. Granted, he is a wonderful orator, but that should not be the sole criterion for electing someone President. Underneath the rhetoric of change there seem to be few specifics.

And there may well be some truth in Hillary's assertion that he has not been vetted as she has. We know that campaigning is a dirty-tricks business, there is such a long way to go, and who knows what may come out when the real tricksters go to work on his background and his record?
