the boids are coming right up CG. Happy New Year everyone and thanks for the visit. My first post is just about to happen.
And yes, Rob, I can revive one of the old ones for now and change it as the year progresses. I cannot use the "floppy hat" one as that was taken by Rainey and on her photostream not mine. I would like it to be a "reflection in water" self-portrait. Last year my hope was to get better at birds in flight. I still hope to do that and of course birds are one of my favorite subjects. But I would also like to work on more abstract images--reflections in water like my last posting for 2007 in my diary (without the happy new year greeting, of course)

January 1, 2008

Had a very slow morning as I had had a really late night. Party number one was good friends, dancing and lots of live Balkan music (Greek, Rom and Bulgarian). Party number 2 was lots of good friends, lots and lots of great food, a big crowd and music. Outside in the garden around a lit firepit was two of my favorite musicians Ftah and Mohammed playing and singing their special brand of Moroccan berber music. Inside was flamenco guitars, singing and dancing. Everyone talking, hugging, kissing, eating etc.

So consequently I stayed up way past my bedtime.

Today in the afternoon Rainey and I took a walk along the San Lorenzo river. There were the usual suspects.

Male Bufflehead

Flight of the Bufflehead

Hope to fly into the New Year, but this evening the flight sort of ended with a "thud".

January 2, 2008

Took my son to the doctor this morning so consequently didn't start work until late. When I finished for the day it was already growing dark. I walked down to the beach and took photos of gulls bathing and reflections of rocks in the water. When I came home my son said his bike was missing which means someone had to have come in our house through his window and taken it. Later we found out that our neighbor also had his house broken into and his laptop stolen. We figure the bike turned out to be the get-away vehicle. Ariel took a walk downtown to let his friends know his bike had been stolen. While he was there he saw someone he didn't know who had it. He questioned the guy and the guy said he had just bought it from an older man. Ariel returned home with his bike.

January 3, 2008

All morning the sky was heavy and grey with expectation of the coming rain. Supposedly a very big wind and rain storm will becoming. This afternoon the rain has started. I need to leave to go to the chiropractor in a little bit. I was hoping the UPS truck would come before I leave as my tripod is supposed to arrive today. One of the changes I want to make this year is to learn how to use a tripod.

Worked all morning but had a moment to drop by the beach to photograph these little gulls bathing.

Gull Bath

I will be having dinner at the Greek restaurant in town tonight--live music and of course we will all get up and dance.

January 5, 2008

Rainy came over and helped me put together my new tripod (Thank you!!) and I decided to take some test shots. I had to do it indoors as there is a deluge outside. I ran out picked a few flowers from my garden and set myself up by the window. I took lots of photographs of this bouquet with many different settings and exposures. One or two, I deliberately over-exposed. This is one of the over-exposed ones that i took to photoshop and played with. i liked the results.

Teresa, yes I started about 3 years ago just before I went to Corsica in September of 2005. I bought a Canon A85 powershot (point and shoot) and used that for about a year or so when I then bought a Canon Rebel xt (digital SLR) before I went to La Corse in September of 2006. At that point I had the kit lens and a 300mm lens and no tripod. I still wasn't able to get good photos of birds and other wildlife but I kept trying. In 2007 I bought the Canon 100-400 mm lens with image stability and a Canon Rebel XTi. Not my dream equipment but I am still in deep debt over these purchases--and add the new tripod to that. More than a hobby--it has become an obsession.

There was a break in the weather this morning and many residents took the opportunity for a walk on the beach. The tide was high and there were lots of pools along the beach that were filled with shorebirds-mostly willets and godwits. There was a great blue heron, one great egret and about 5 snow egrets and one female golden-eye swimming around in the pools. Along the shore were more willets, snowy plovers and sanderlings. I had a great time walking along the beach with my friend Barb and sneaking up on egrets. Had to cut it short though as I needed to go to the radio station for my show.

Gypsy I have to admit-- I am amazed you haven't used a tripod before. A brave, new, awesome world awaits you! Especially for shots of stuff at low-light.. It's so much fun! You MUST try night-time long exposure shots- which is my favorite genre.. something I don't do enough of.

I'm guessing you got a particularly good tripod- I just got walmart's special and am *mostly* ok with it... I could use a quality tripod tho.. My requirement at at the time was to be extremely light for backpacking as I'll have to haul it along with everything else for an extended stay in the wild. Heavy ones are the good ones.. Its a trade-off.

I look forward to the brave new world coming for you in 2008... a 50mm lens hopefully, and a tripod you have now.. yay!

Yes, but did I take the tripod to the beach this morning. NO. So this shot and the other one I posted from today are still done handheld. I bough a Manfrotto tripod which isn't particularly heavy but very sturdy and has clip adjustments rather that tightening by screwing the knobs. I also bought a Manfrotto head that is much cheaper than a Wimberly but I like it very much. Now, I need to not only learn how to use it but to remember to take it with me. Duh.

January 2, 2008

Someone once asked me why I chose birds as my subject to photograph. I love birds and I also love the challenge. While of course birds are not my only subjects, since I live here on the central coast of California they are abundant and various.

This afternoon after work I drove to Moss landing. I took the tripod with me. Although the tripod is everything I want in one, I do not like the trigger grip that I purchased. Not at all. I found it frustrating, slow, and very difficult to use. I do not know if I can return it or perhaps there is something I am doing wrong. I more often than not took the camera off the tripod and just did the handheld thing.
Juvenile Black-crowned NIght Heron in a Eucalyptus tree (hand-held shot)

Yoann, I have never see Karate Kid so I don't know if the great blue heron in flight shot looks like something from that movie I do like the great blue heron shot very much too. I was quite pleased to get it and you are right emil I would never have gotten it with this tripod grip I purchased. duh.

I agree Jonathan about anything new (especially at my age) that one tries to learn feels weird; but the trigger grip is tight, moves too slow, and hurts my hand to use. I found it worthless and frustrating. I missed more shots and the ones I got were less in focus than my usual shots.

This morning before it started to rain I worked in a garden very near the beach. The weather was threatening so I walked to the end of the block to the beach, saw this little egret so delicately picking its way through the storm-littered beach. Just a few shots before it started dumping. Rainey and I were supposed to meet at noon but we had to cancel. I came home and worked on a photo project for I Muvrini. Their office had sent me an email wanting to use a few of the photos I had taken of a particular village in Corsica. Cool. Happy to do that. As it never stopped raining, I was able to finish the project and mail off a disc.

Found you ! Bookmark Now ! I like the tripod thing but to be sure you have to devote more time to a shot - it does clear up the night shot tremors....good stuff Gypsy.

Hello La M, I saw this strutting, ruffled little egret on Explore earlier today. You did a super job with those beautiful flowers indoors. Good luck with the new tripod, although I would think most of your outdoor nature shooting would be hand-held. I can't visualize you chasing after a hawk lugging a tripod!

No rain today although the sky is still cloudy and grey. I worked in the morning and must return after my late lunch here. i decided to drive home by the cliffs to see if there was any action. I happened to look up in a tall cypress and see what i thought was a large hawk in the tree. i pulled over and got my camera out. I was thrilled to see it was a peregrine falcon quite a bit closer than the last one I had photographed. i took about 200 shots of it before it flew away. This was the last photo I got before it was gone.

I posted one other shot of this falcon

I have a monopod... I don't see much value in them except they make a pretty good walking stick. ;-) Maybe they're OK to get away with shutter speed slightly lower than you could do handheld.. but the camera still shakes.. maybe not quite as much but still.

The feather patterns on that falcon you captured is breathtaking!!!!!!!!

I am thinking that unless one has a Wimberley mount on their tripod then tripods are really useless for photographing animals. Landscapes, people, macros, fine; but if the subject is moving, forget it. This was a handheld shot.

I was so excited I am amazed my camera didn't shake more than it did. The other good thing about a tripod though is that it does allow you to shoot longer as your hands and arms don't get as tired from holding a heavy lens up in the air; but I still prefer the flexibility of handheld.

I had to take my truck in for some repairs early this morning. I had called my birding friend Judy to see if she wanted to go play for a while since i cannot work without my truck. We drove to Elkhorn Slough and wandered around in different areas and then to Watsonville to some of the lakes and then Struve slough. Now I am home waiting for my truck to be finished. I am supposed to go to visit a friend this evening to give her a lesson in basic photo editing (very basic, since that is all I know).

I use a monopod with the long lens just to offset the fact I don't have VR. Tim is right about the walking stick aspect (to a degree). I set the tension on the ball head so that I can press the camera where I want it - then it becomes useful. Mostly to absorb the weight of the camera/lens...and your combo is heavy I would imagine. Great shot on the falcon...I dream.

Woah, lovely photos. I love the way the egret's feathers are all ruffled, it's as if he's resentful of the weather too!

Making an attempt at my self-portrait entry.

Self-portrait with floppy hat

Not just a straight self-portrait though, my shadow with the mountains of Bavella (Corsica) inside them and a double image of U Falcu. Shows more of the "inside" of me rather than the "outside".
